I think they dial back that washed out production approach just slightly and that actually gives breathing room to the songwriting more. Because of that, I believe this is an improvement overall compared to the record that comes before it. The writing in general just gets better, especially in regards to the melodies which seem to be taking more influence from pop music because there are some really good hooks throughout.
