Various Artists - Punk Goes 90’s, Vol. 2
5

I think to add to my already established online pretension, I’d like to start, not only this review, but to conclude this entire “punk goes whatever” series with a bit of an overarching theme. That being the idea of a flawed premise. Because I realise throughout covering almost every entry in this shit-claded dynasty, I’ve never really addressed the elephant in the room - what would a hypothetically good cover record be? Normally that’s quite easy, either you do ... read more

Admiral Angry - Buster
92

If I had to point to my favourite thing about the entire spectrum of extreme music then it without a doubt would be the uncanny ability for its artists to take the spectrum of awful experiences someone can go through and transform them into art that is equally as uncomfortable as it is cathartic for the listener. No other genre captures it in such a visceral and raw manner in my opinion and I have always found this lump sum of various musical genres enticing for this very reason.

Depeche Mode - Construction Time Again
88

I try to stay levelheaded, but I’m an anxious fella and as we stare down the barrel of a laundry list of existential issues our species faces, I can’t help but reflect on how tragically perfect “construction time again” has aged. As if their political album was anything but protest and more a forewarning as to how our own self-destruction is built upon the very foundations of our society.

It’s tricky for sure and turbulent times we do live in, but there’s a ... read more

Björk - Post
95

Y’know, when it comes to discographies like this, those that exist within what I’ll call the standard music nerd cannon, I always feel quite disenfranchised from writing reviews. Not that there isn’t anything to talk about of course, quite the opposite in fact, but it is a case of how redundant are my thoughts in context of the larger discourse surrounding the album/artist, to which pretty much anybody with even an incline of want to discuss music on a somewhat critical level ... read more

Slowdive - Souvlaki
82

Of all the classic music nerd albums, there are few I have an extensive history with more than Slowdive’s Souvlaki. I guess in many ways it was the album that introduced me to the larger online music space and all its rancid fruits.

And as such, I was totally ready to give this a couple of paragraphs and move on. Nothing new to say here that those more articulate and intelligent haven’t pieced together better than I could ever dream of. But as I typed, I kept feeling the need to ... read more

Whitechapel - The Valley
95

A byproduct of natural artistic progression, or an obvious pivot following some more contentious records? You decide. Point is, this is Whitechapel’s best record.

It’s quite frankly astonishing how in under three years this band went from writing Deathcore with a more accessible tinge, who’s appeal fell upon empty political platitudes and frat boy attitudes, only to hammer out an experience that is leagues more mature, smart and expressive than many would even deem ... read more
