My biggest mistake in approaching Chrome was to take it as a play on MC5 when they’re actually more of Noise act than anything. If it means anything, and I suspect it means alot, Chrome beat almost every other band to noise rock, and perhaps even industrial rock, but had a take on it that remains unique 40 years later. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Good Son

Nick Cave gets clean, finds Jesus, starts making this sort of rock gospel hybrid, and makes his best set of songs ever, though if the former is related to the later its hard to know. Cave doesn’t lose his edge at all really (if anything it becomes more noticeable) but turns his collection of angry murder songs and tales of woe into larger than life biblical myths (Full of Woe and Murder, but there’s an decent amount of really nice love songs thrown in here). The Buttholes “fucked” punk on their first album and on Psychic Powerless Another Mans Sac they “fucked” it with psychedelic. BH were far from the originators of Noise Rock, Psychedelic Noise, Psychedelic Punk, but Butthole Surfers were arguably more chaotic than any punk band before that point, and more intensive than any psychedelic band before that point, forever changing both genres. There are certain superficial aspects of Frances the Mute that scared me away from it when I first heard it as a 15 year old. It is a concept album in which the concept is incredibly inspecific, It is mixed otherworldly loud, where all the songs feel like they should be a 1/3rd shorter. However, Frances the Mute took the extreme indulgences of the 10 preceding years of rock music and presented its best possible outcome, creating a specific type of intensity unseen both before and likely after. ... read more
