There are certain superficial aspects of Frances the Mute that scared me away from it when I first heard it as a 15 year old. It is a concept album in which the concept is incredibly inspecific, It is mixed otherworldly loud, where all the songs feel like they should be a 1/3rd shorter. However, Frances the Mute took the extreme indulgences of the 10 preceding years of rock music and presented its best possible outcome, creating a specific type of intensity unseen both before and likely after. ... read more
