I don’t understand the hate for this album
I like the parodies of different genres that Gorldon obviously has a level of respect for
Not every song is super memorable but there are genuinely catchy moments on this album that stick with you.
For what it is, I think it’s a solid parody album
CAKE has a very unique and recognizable songwriting and instrumental style, but this album seems to lean more into synth work. It took a few listens for me to totally appreciate the sound, but after a while it grew to be my personal favorite CAKE album. The lyrics are strong, but don’t take themselves too seriously. There is strong storytelling and each song seems to live in its own word.
also “take your psycho little dogs” is their greatest line ever
This was a very visual album if that makes sense. There wasn’t a lot of incredible writing or storytelling moments but the instrumentation built an atmosphere that pulled me in. The album does feels very connected, with every song sounding like they are apart of the big picture. I think I need to listen to it again to fully absorb it, (which I do with most albums) but overall very enjoyable listen!
It’s a classic for a reason.
There’s nothing mind blowing or ground breaking about it, it’s just straight good rap. Classic New York style beats, good writing, and overall an enjoyable project. Very impressive when you consider it’s Nas’ first album. There are some weird gay slurs being thrown around but it was the 90s so I’ll give it a pass.
