Everything this guy touches turns to gold. His songwriting scratches the exact right itch for me. I love how simple some of these tracks are too. The negative space works in this albums favor. I feel like what isn’t there is just as important as what is, especially for tracks like All my Thrills. Whatever scuffed dance pop he’s managing to hone in on is making him stand out as one of my favorite artists in recent years.

I saw an r/cagethelephant post that said these songs are sister songs and gave it an 8/10
if these are sister songs, then mid runs in the family
Kinda spotty, but the bangers do hit hard.
BEST SONG: Twist my Fingaz
OTHER BANGERS: Don't Come to LA, I Got a Question, Still Brazy, FDT
A full album from these guys is gonna coooooook.
BEST SONG: Icy Winds
OTHER BANGERS: The Whell, Shepherds Carol, I'm Happy You're Here
Feels like I went virtual crate digging and found some gem of a 70s jam band album. Just with the added perk of modern recording equipment. Great beer sipping music on a sunny afternoon. Good job boys.
BEST SONG: Your Soul and Mine
OTHER BANGERS: Mid Spiral, Last Laugh, Take me With You
Billie's gotten really good at writing songs man. Even if the entire album says relatively soft and submerged, she still fines variety throughout the runtime. Birds of a Feather needs to be studied. Incredible track
BEST SONG: Birds of a Feather
OTHER BANGERS: Lunch, Wildflower, Bittersuite, The Greatest
Production is doing a lot for me. Realistically this album is closer to the 70s/100 for me but the production is so pleasant. My issues with this album are purely song writing. There are so many bangers and highlights front loaded on the album. While the back half really trails off (cept Slug). Also, this whole album feels like it’s built of felt, cloth, strings, and wooden blocks…. And the Gbiv comes out of nowhere. It’s a cool left field rap banger (reminds me of Quadecas ... read more
Solid. Definitely feel the parannoul steam coming off this one. A little spotty, but the bangers hit HARD.
BEST SONG: paper planes
OTHER BANGERS: figure me out, room for one, far apart
Kinda feels like Yellow Magic Orchestra if they focused an album on familial trauma. This ones a little too reserved for my taste, but for the more patient, there's good stuff here.
BEST SONG: Completely Half
Feels like Jack is whispering but he thinks he's yelling? I get it, its a quieter and subtler project than the usual bleachers affair.... but songwriting is also milder and less impactful. These feel like hints and ideas of what could've been better songs. Production is cool at times.
BEST SONG: Alma Matter
OTHER BANGERS: Tiny Moves, Call me After Midnight
I think he might've slipped crack in here. I can't fucking stop. I think March Me said 7/10, April me said 8/10, and now I'm confident this is at leat 9/10. I don't think its perfect, but holy fuck is it close. The production is convincing me that Mk.gee is some sort of musical wizard. It just scratches every itch perfectly man. It's not even that heavily layered, it's almost like the space, quiet dynamics, and lack of noise are used as an instrument itself. Kinda like how bubbles in soda are ... read more
A post-punk band with talk/sing vocals over dance-punk instrumentals out of the UK! What a unique and original idea.
Jokes aside, this is one of my favorite albums out of this new wave of English post-punk. Every song locks the fuck into the wonky ass groove it establishes. It's almost tangentially a funk album in that way. Instrumental choices are all interesting without being weird for the sake of weird, it's all subtle shit you start noticing after a couple of listens. It's also not afraid ... read more
Dissapointing is the only word that comes to mind. Heard the Mag-bay single and was super hyped for this album but uh..... Nothing even comes close to it in terms of quality. Had a moment where I actively paused the music to make sure my headphones were connected correctly.
BEST SONG: Dissapearing (Magdalena Bay)
As a straight boy, I feel a little like I’m looking in from afar. But there’s some very self aware and interesting stuff said throughout this record. Over some crazy sounding beats. The first couple songs are fantastic.
BEST SONGS: Songs 1-4 (too lazy to check rn)
Bon Iver worship aside, there's some really moving stuff on here. But every time I try this album I end up wanting it to be better than it is. My main issue is that there's a lot of interlude-esque fluff (either that or the song writing just feels inconsistent).
BEST SONG: Same Day, Same Face (could genuinely feel myself choke up on this one)
OTHER BANGERS: First Place, Co Pathetic, Years End
This is to Chance's Big Day what Utopia is to Yeezus. I don't know how else to say it.
Gary's music always felt corny to me.... That is not the case this time around. A genuine coolness pervades this whole album. Versatile record too, songs constantly leap over genre borers.
BEST SONG: JPEG RAW
OTHER BANGERS: Maktub, Alone Together
