(Reviewing all of Radiohead’s discography #3. Yes I have already heard all of their albums)
Ok Computer is one of the most praised albums ever, and for good reason. On this album Radiohead basically entirely abandon grunge and full invest into some of the art rock that was on The Bends. And hot take: it’s a masterpiece.
Theres nothing I can say about this album that hasn’t been said 500 times, but I’ll go through the highlights.
First off, the production on this album is incredible. There’s so many interesting sounds and powerful moments.
Paranoid Android is one of the best songs ever created. There’s production is nothing short of genius, it’s so weird and spacey. Thom’s vocals are just incredible and he perfectly matches the instrumental. Somehow, in its 6 minutes runtime it completely changes 3 times and that makes it feel like a journey. The guitar playing is in amazing and makes the song feel so much more powerful. It’s melodic and chaotic. The end of the song features a choral breakdown, where the song becomes an intensely eerie song. Yet it still builds to be climatic.
Exit Music (For A Flim) has one of the best climaxes of any Radiohead song. It starts very slow and creepy, and then this huge dirty synth drops into the mix to make it ever more cinematic. It’s epic, overwhelming and haunting.
Let Down is beautiful, Karma Police is incredible. But the climax of the album, No
Surprises is one of the most haunting, powerful and beautiful songs ever created. The feeling of wanting a simple life with “no surprises” is one of the most beautiful and sad feelings a human can experience, and I relate to this song strongly.
Overall, what can I say? It’s a masterpiece.
