Sickboyrari - Ice Cream & Mac 10s
70

Cloud rap legend Black Kray's 2013 mixtape Ice Cream & Mac 10s is a good little tape that doesn't exceed his previous work, Crack Cloud$ Over Art$ Kitchen, but still has merit going for it has a lot of the tracks are interesting to listen to, have great spacey production, and great rapping from Kray. Some tracks here feel a little half baked but overall a large majority are good.

Lil Mabu - YOUNG GENIUS
10

Lil Mabu... Jesus. This industry plant releases his debute album with one gimmick and one gimmick only: I am a white teenager who grew up with high amounts of privilege who raps about the gang life. Please laugh. The tracklist of 17 goddamn songs is loaded with the most souless and corporate drill songs of all time. Mabu is simply nothing but a short-lived trend that if my wishes come true will die out soon.

Fav Track- OPPY DAY (Because it's hilarious lol)

Maruja - Connla's Well
90

Picture this, me, scrolling through albumoftheyear.org on a Saturday night, thinking "Hey maybe I should have a look at the new releases tab and give an album a listen". What I didn't expect to hear was a fantastic EP with brilliant instrumentation, unique vocals and interesting lyrics. Maruja, although a recently created band, has put out a great piece of work that should receive more praise and admiration as it remains relatively unpopular. Personally for me, I loved this EP and I ... read more

Buckshot - BURNING BARN
80

Member of the Haunted Mound collective Buckshot comes in with hard instrumentals produced by members of the Haunted Mound oscar18 and Sematary, much like his group members they sound very much like Chief Keef and his contemporaries. Lyrical content on one hand has the same themes as other HM members, but with Buckshot it also delves into mental health, suicidal, and drug addiction problems. Buckshot definitely has some of the best work out the collective, so I can't wait to see were he goes ... read more

Bladee - Cold Visions
90

Drain Gang Ceo Bladee comes through with a brand new mixtape with a variety of different production styles, from producers such as Whitearmor to F1lthy. The sounds on this mixtape seem to pull from all eras of Bladee, with the hard 'rage-type' songs like from Working On Dying, pretty and floaty songs like from Icedancer, and a combanation of the two with The Fool sounding songs. This tape is just all killer no filler with Bladee giving one of the best performances of his career.

A funny Micheal Cera-looking group of folks come together to make a great emo album filled with passionate lyrics and highschool drama. Really great for a debut album.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!
100

Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven is a monumental achievement for sound. This album, over the course of it's movie-like length, simulates feelings of sadness, fear, hope, and everything inbetween with just instruments and vocal samples. One thing I do enjoy about this album is it's open-to-interpretation sort of message, as you can take just about anything away from this record. My personal interpretation of the meaning is the worsening and suffering ... read more

J. Cole - Might Delete Later
40

God J Cole does really know how to put you to sleep huh. I swear to god he is the most overrated rapper of this decade, how do you listen to this fake deep shit and act like it's good? And why are you making cancel culture bars in 2024 it makes you sound old and bitter. Also cool it with the transphobia. The only thing this tape has got going is the ok production but besides that I see no reason to listen to this snooze fest. How can you call To Pimp a Butterfly boring when you are literally J ... read more

Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music For Airports
90

A beautiful and hypnotising record design mastefully to make you truly feel like your in an empty airport lounge, waiting for a plane that will never arrive, soaking up the ambiance of your environment. This description may be a little pretentious, but oh well. Listening to this album made me think of a quote from the great Quavo of the Migos, 'im going to eaven'. Thank you, and goodnight.

Earl Sweatshirt & The Alchemist - VOIR DIRE [Streaming Version]
80

Earl Sweatshirt and The Alchemist are on the best rapper/producer duo of today, shown greatly in this album. The beats on this record all have a beautiful and atmosphere feel, and Earl's ambiguous lyrics add to the feeling of mystery and being lost in it all.

Fav Track- Heat Check

Vince Staples - Hell Can Wait

Hell Can Wait from Vince Staples is filled with hard hitting bars, great inflection and rapping talent from Vince but unfortunately falters slightly with the production due to weird bass and slightly poor mixing.

Radiohead - Kid A
90

When I first listened to this album a couple of years ago, I didn't really get the hype and praise for Kid A. But now, after listening to some of Radiohead's insperations for this record such as Aphex Twin, I have grown attached to the experimental sounds this provides compared to the rest of Radiohead's discography. Although I do believe Radiohead's other records like OK Computer surpass this because of more tracks that can be listened outside the context of the album, this is still one of the ... read more

AJR - OK ORCHESTRA
20

AJR is like Imagine Dragons if instead of making music for car ads they made music for millenials who are too obsessed with disney and unironically say the word 'adulting'. The songs on this shitshow are some of the most overproduced, annoying and lyrically obnoxious stuff I've heard in a while. I would not recommend this to anyone.

Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island
40

Neutral Milk Hotel's debut album 'On Avery Island' leaves a lot to be desired, as the record is riddled with poor mixing and terribly distorted instruments that don't have the beautiful sound of their next project, 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea', which exceeds it in every way. This album does have some gems in the rough, but it is quite a slog to get through.

Michael Jackson - Off the Wall
90

Michael Jackson gives us one of the best disco albums ever, with brilliant production from some of the masters of music. Just hearing one track of this record makes me wanna dance. Some songs on this album drag on a little too long but that small critique does not take away from this albums sound.

Mac DeMarco - 2
70

Mac DeMarco's sophmore album provides a soft sound with a relaxing vocal showcase that only a man with a nicotine addiction can give. Some of the tracks at the beginning of the record have most of the instrumental in the left ear, which I thought was a problem, but overall I would say I liked this project and I am looking foward to hearing his future works.

Fav Track- My Kind of Woman

Least Fav- Ode to Viceroy

Boldy James & The Alchemist - Super Tecmo Bo
80

Boldy James and The Alchemist come together to create a tight, sonically great album filled with hard hitting bars and unique production. Some beats at the start carry the same sound, and the one feature on the album I thought was lacking, but despite that the music is still a fantastic showcase of the talents of a great rapper and one of the best modern working producers.

Fav Track- Bumps and Bruises

Least Fav- Hot Water Tank

HXG - Snot or Not
10

most of this album is filled with horribly mixed/produced and boring beats that leave more to be desired, especially considering Homixide Gang's previous work had their faults but had a lot more listenable tracks. Beno and Meechie are significantly below Destroy Lonely and Ken Carson, let alone Carti. This album showcases the Opium label's lack of quality control.
