Hitting the landing with a trilogy across any form of art is a notoriously difficult task, and unfortunately, Hurry Up Tomorrow is more the rule than the exception.
With After Hours perfectly blending atmosphere and the funky synths of the 80s, and Dawn FM choosing to abandon the ambience of the first album in favour of going full-force 80s, I had predicted that Hurry Up Tomorrow may instead lean into atmosphere and abandon the 80s sounds. While there are definitely still sprinkles of icy keys ... read more
As the second in a trilogy of albums, 'Dawn FM' reaches higher highs than its predecessor - 'After Hours' - but also hits lower lows. Interestingly, Abel digs deeper into the 80s and funk sounds that he drew on as inspiration for 'After Hours', and leaves behind a lot of the ambience and atmosphere present on the first album. Although I'm not knowledgeable enough to speak to the exact influences that Mendes & Mendes drew on, the songs have a similar flare to a lot of Brazilian music ... read more
'Geography' is the only other project by Tom Misch I have heard other than this, and so I was very pleased to hear him build on the sound from that album. Sounds a bit more grounded than that album, and yet retains the bright guitars, funky basslines, and spacey sound. "Insecure", "Invincible", and "Cinnamon Curls" are personal favourites of mine.
