As someone who’s never been a fan of J. Cole, I’m happy he ended his career on a high note with, possibly, his best album.
I don’t think it needed a concept, especially considering how the first disc, which is meant to showcase his perspective at 29, isn’t very different from the second. The tracklist could also have been trimmed down quite a bit, being bogged down by some unfocused songs and a few stinkers.

Coming off a pretty lacklustre beef against some TDE C-listers, Joey drops a forty minute meditation on his status in the rap game with a few allusions to some personal struggles and the result is a lame attempt at high-brow luxury rap (or "real rap... but still high art" as he puts it). This preluxe was dropped to create hype around JID’s upcoming project but to be honest if anything it will probably achieve the opposite since this is a regression from The Forever Story in every way possible.

This was my introduction to Lucy Dacus and while I can acknowledge she is a talented songwriter and seems to be a really intelligent and likeable person, I also think her music has some shortcomings that make it, at least in my eyes, pretty middle of the road.
