Random Hip-Hop Series #1:

While completely lacking charisma as a comedy rapper, MC Paul Barman has a serious talent for choosing jazzy, fun music to rap over. This release includes two immaculate MF DOOM beats that Barman arguably ruins, but the instrumentals themselves are very, very good.

Rating on instrumental quality: 7.5/10, Rating with Barman: 6/10, Overall Rating: 6.5/10

Favorite beat: Excuse You / Anarchist Bookstore Part 1

MADLIB Discography Dive #6:

Declaime, unfortunately, is an average or below-average emcee who doesn't add any charisma to Madlib's production. Still, though, this is a set of some of the best beats Madlib has composed this far. Chilled out and calm beats carry the project, and this is probably the most downtempo Madlib has produced thus far, setting aside Yesterday's New Quintet. Worth it for the production only.

MADLIB Discography Dive #5:

2001's 'Bomb Shelter' marks the first release under Yesterday's New Quintet, Madlib's fictional jazz group featuring Ahmad Miller, Monk Hughes, Joe McDuphrey, Malik Flavors, and Otis Jackson Jr. - all fictional musicians. This EP is an absolute trip of groovy, layered jazz production, but its fatal flaw is that it only consists of four very short songs, two of which are under a minute long. Thankfully, it's only a precursor to the huge ... read more

MADLIB Discography Dive #4:

The first “essential” record in Madlib’s discography, unless you consider Lootpack's 'Soundpieces', which I wouldn't fault you for. Quasimoto’s ‘The Unseen’ is a record inspired by isolation. It was recorded in a week of weed-inspired frenzy in Madlib’s basement, and the cohesion and care showcased throughout the record is astonishing with that in consideration. On this record, Madlib and the high-pitched ... read more

MADLIB Discography Dive #3:

Subpar. Basic beats and poor performance. Better releases to come in the canon of Madlib.
