As a clear spiritual successor to the Dirty Little Car EP, I can confidently say it sure does live up to that title. Though this may have been an attempt at returning to his roots... this was not something Trout achieved. We have lost the Plunderphonic Trout we once had, all those months ago. Though, a true standout, that really resembles a new and improved early-Trout, was given to us. Washing Machine, song of the year.
This may be Trout's most "serious" record to date, though that alone is what makes it, at least to an extent, weaker than some of the rest of his work. There's lack of substance, it scares me that he may be turning into an artist that he, truthfully, is not.
My biggest gripe about the EP's actual material isn't in the sound at all, it's in the cover. Compared to all of his other covers, this feels juvenile, a step too far back it terms of creative direction. ... read more
I don't know why I was hoping for some Alt Rock Power Pop, but whatever man. This just sounds like if she made some 2020s synthpop... Which is okay, since it's Olivia Rodrigo... and she did it better than everyone else. Strings in the second half are a nice touch, appreciate that.
