You think you can just walk in here, to the big boyfriend cafeteria, and smoochy-smooch on my football man? HA! Big wish
In Jane Remover's debut, we are presented with topics of gender dysphoria wrapped in groundbreaking glitchy production.
What can I say other than that this is easily my favorite pop-punk/emo album. It refuses to fall too deep into the self-depricating and overly depressed tropes of the genre, instead remaining grounded and using the "bootstraps" rhetoric of elder generations to convey its messages. While it does have the grand call-and-response guitar-heavy tracks that are typical of the genre, it also is able to create gentle and real moments in songs like "There, There," "The Devil in ... read more
Definitely an interesting listen from a historical standpoint, but it's very dated and reminds me that I could be listening to something else.
In this debut EP, femtanyl create's a narrative around the trans experience succinctly through earworm-like production and jarring lyrics. Songs like GIRL HELL 1999, PUSH UR T3MPRR, and KATAMARI are absolute bangers, but hide messages about trans fetishization, dehumanization, and abuse in plain sight by hypnotizing you with thumping kicks and out-of-left-field samples as well as treating these subjects as just normal aspects of everyday life. I feel as though many people write this ... read more
As a huge femtanyl fan, this album really disappointed me. The lead single BODY THE PISTOL got my hopes up really high for this project, but instead I was left feeling like I was listening to the same muddy mix over and over again. My biggest complaint is in how far back the vocals are in the mix; while femtanyl's music has never been incredibly lyrics-heavy, I really would like to hear Noelle's punchy and rhythmic vocal style front and center as I believe it is one of the ... read more
Ninajirachi's first LP is a great EDM treat in a genre that sometimes feels like it's been played out. The production is consistently great and rich with detail and texture, while the lyrics remain introspective and personal. Songs like Delete, iPod Touch, and Battery Death are liable to get stuck inside your head and have you humming and tapping your foot without even listening to them. Although, some songs do feel like they don't quite fit or wear on you, such as London Song.
La Dispute paints multiple pictures of grief through poetic lyrics and powerful instrumentation in what I consider to be their magnum opus. While this album is ultimately about dealing with personal grief, the perspective is rarely focused on the self, instead focusing on anecdotes and stories of others. This keeps the album feeling fresh and prevents it from getting bogged down with "woe is me" rhetoric. While many would remember this album for songs like King Park and Edward Benz, ... read more
Such a funky vibe. What a fantastic crate dig from my roommate. And yes, Mr. Earland, I think you're a nasty guy.
It's fine. Lizzy has a nice voice and decent songwriting chops, but I came away from this project pretty disinterested and bored. I feel as though listening to individual songs would be far more enjoyable, but a whole album just wears thin.
EDIT 3/12/26: 62 -> 78
Upon a second listen, I was incredibly unfair to this album. Perhaps it was because I was 3 hours into a 4.5 hour trip, but for some reason I was very pessimistic. While some of my original critiques, such as some songs ... read more
This album truly reels you in with hypnotic spacey synths and strangely cadenced bubbly vocals. A solid listen throughout with no real misses. Makes me want to listen to it while laying on a couch late at night.
EDIT 4/23/26: 87 -> 94
Somehow, I gave this an 87. This album is far better than that. What was I thinking?
Quadeca does a great job of making you feel as though you're lost at sea and completely alone with your thougts. Truly fantastic atmosphere and a wonderful album to listen to while walking around outside. Definitely a step above his other recent projects which makes me excited for what he comes up with next.
What a load of fun. This album had me smiling from ear to ear throughout. It really reminds me of what it was like hearing Skrillex for the first time a decade ago. Is this album high art? No. Is it trying to be? Again, no. It's a mixtape full of self-aware humor and exhilerating drops. "This beat drop has been seized by Atlantic Records" will always make me laugh. 'VOLTAGE' is a genuinely fantastic song and I'm glad it's been released legitimately. This album ... read more
The first full length LP from pop-emo band Arm's Length is a real treat to any fan of the genre; tackling themes of parental trauma through anthemic and well-written tracks. Almost every song on this album feels like it could be a modern emo/pop-punk classic, which is truly commendable coming from a debut.
Before getting into the meat of this review, I would like to make it abundantly clear that this is my personal interpretation of the meaning of these songs. This may not be what the ... read more
On "The Crux," Djo fuses the warm synth-pop that he's become known for with the sounds of many artists before him. There are songs on this album that sound heavily influenced by other artists, likely done subconsciously.
The album starts very strong with 'Lonesome Is A State of Mind' which is distinctly Keery and infectiously catchy. 'Basic Being Basic' sounds like something straight off of Slaughter Beach, Dog's "At The Moonbase," which is a ... read more
This album is perfect.
No, really. I cannot find a singular flaw with this album. The intro drone leading into the riff of "Cage Girl/Camgirl" just sucks you in and really sets the tone for the album; its subject matter not quite lulling you into a sense of security as something is clearly off. Any naivety is quickly washed away with the next track, "Lips." This is where the album really catches its stride with its pummeling guitars and blown out drums which seem to fill ... read more
Promise I like it like that
Jane's 3rd LP (Rest in peace the other half of Teen Week) is something I've been really looking forward to and did not disappoint. With big production, tons of attitude, and copius amounts of energy, Revengeseekerz has had me jumping up and down and pumping my fist like a frat guy at an EDM show for the past few days. Jane seems to never want to stick to one sound and is constantly reinventing theirself, and this release is no exception with this new rage ... read more
