So returning to this for the first time in a while because I found the vinyl at a record fair and decided why not. I already wanted to relisten and I remembered it being really good. I actually picked it over allelujah don’t bend ascend by Gybe bc I wanted to relisten to this so bad and I’m so glad that I did. This is some of the most brutal and unique music I’ve ever heard. Greep’s vocals are just so delightfully weird in the best way possible and mesh super well with the instrumentals. Speaking of, the instrumentals are utterly fucking insane, and rarely let up throughout the album. Where they do though the album gets super beautiful and melodic. There’s so much variety here and that’s probably best captured in the 7 minute epic, The Race is About to Begin. This song captures everything amazing about this album into one 7 minute package and it couldn’t be more perfect. To be honest it might not even be my favorite on the album because Welcome to Hell is just so amazing. I think this album has so much potential to be a 100 it’s insane, and I think that potential was realized with last year’s The New Sound. I think that record fleshes out the more melodic sounds on this album and does even more catchy and intense riffs, while also incorporating a new more Latin influenced sound. It’s really great seeing how Greep evolved the sounds from this record and I’m super excited to see how Black Midi evolved the sounds of their previous records.
