I think Six Sex was going in the right direction with her sound, becoming darker and more ironic with each EP. I really expected "ULTRA" to be the ultimate culmination of that - a Six Sex "magnum opus" of sorts- but unfortunately, I think she still needs one more project until she can deliver a cohesive record. There are very promising experimental songs in this, but also some generic uninspired stuff more reminiscent of her earlier works.
Cute tho :)
this is the type of music you think is OK but when it ends you realize you've listened to one of the most refreshingly amazing singles of the year
WOW! Such a diverse interpretation of the punk sound of the 2010s... This album still stands the test of time. So unique and fun.
I know that the joke about the cover is that it's supposed to be a hot body with an ugly face, but what if I said I actually think the face is hot af and I don't care for the body at all... then what... would you call me a fag yes or no
The "bonus" tracks only reinforce my first thought that they should've always been in the album from its release. They add layers of complexity to an already ambitious work without subtracting anything from the original concept. Chef's kiss.
... read more
Nothingburger.
Robyn is BY FAR the most methodical and precise pop artist to ever grace this earth. She is one of the few who can recognize all of the genre's intricacies and nuances. 8 years after the defining "Honey", I would certainly believe Robyn if she said she spent more or less a year working on each of the 9 tracks of "Sexistential". Everything here is so clean and right and hits me in spots I never thought existed. There are sounds in this album I heard for the first time.
Truly baffling how Slayyyter manages to create a world that is so distinctly hers but also respectfully Crystal Castle's, Ayesha Erotica's, SOPHIE's, Lady Gaga's... "WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA" is naked, asymmetrical, cheap, dirty. And I don't care if none of those words made sense. Neither would she.
Dare I say this is one of the most defining records of this decade, a masterclass.
"rough from ólafsfjörður ★" is definitely ROUGH (duh), but can you blame it for that? I think so.
While tracks like "bruyant" and "you stole my swag" beg the question, "What if 'Brat' by Charli XCX was driven by crack instead of cocaine?", the rest sound very unfinished. The good kind of unfinished, tho; the one that feels like untapped potential. But still, unfinished.
This makes it all the more ironic to say that I like ... read more
Trust Olivia Dean when she says this is not that deep because it REALLY isn't. It's the type of music that plays when a character in a low-budget TV show has a dream where they're a popstar... Just shallow and tacky, and incredibly 2017 in a non-nostalgic way.
"Wuthering Heights" excels in everything that Fennell's film failed to do. The autotune and synths don't keep Charli in her comfort zone, as many expected after "Brat", but introduce her into a new territory of organic instruments, its anachronism inviting the listener to consider what Brontë's book has to say today. I was left wishing she took even more risks, as in "House" and "Funny Mouth", rather than making music for TikTok edits.
and what if I say this is one of the best albums ever even if it's a 76 then what
I really wanted to give this a higher rating but I started comparing it to other albums on my profile and realized "It's Not That Deep" is so forgettable and, honestly, not that deep at all. She picked the right title.
