Re-writing this because it needs to be done.
Essentially a single 38-minute long song, Wide Awake! is the anthem of modern post-punk and the crank-wave movement. The most complete piece of music from Parquet Courts that I have heard yet. Every Track is masterfully crafted and molded into the albums narrative and social commentary.
Tracks like Total Football, Violence, Almost Had to Start a Fight/In and Out of Patience, Normalization & Wide Awake punch hard and feel like endless ... read more
Genesis achieves a very difficult balance on this album; It doesn't take a genius to see the messaging in this one, and it doesn't take much thought to enjoy it either. On REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE, Owusu is heavily political. He jabs voter hivemind, conservative bigotry, and the scourge of grifter "culture" throughout this whole album, and he makes it sound pretty damn good too. On STRUGGLER we really saw Genesis delve into and embrace a hard dance-punk sound ... read more
Around Mother of God this started to sound like QOTSA to me so I locked in and restarted for a proper listen and man this thing rocks. Love the Irish vocal inflections, the spaciness of every song, the drums and the pacing of the album as a whole. While I liked the album as a whole, the songs are kinda just fine on their own and nothing more. To put it simply there’s no bangers I fear.
Something I noticed is aesthetically it has some strong similarities to mid 2010’s alternative ... read more
Noise pop is typically a very hit-or-miss genre for me. It often lacks readability (being able to hear and make sense of lyrics and vocals) which doesn't usually do it a lot of favors despite being a main appeal. But it has to have noise and static, which is also an appeal. Finding a balance between the two is a rarity. Some people pull it off but that doesn't automatically make it good. So, how do you separate yourself? You have to add something, and something this album adds is ... read more
38 minutes of the same bassline and guitar riff accompanied by the same quiet vocals. 38 minutes of getting edged before being left blueballed. Decently chill listen though despite that.
Some nice, slow, folk-y, post rock. Was really digging around when I stumbled across a song off here, and I liked it enough to give the album a go. Doesn’t do anything particularly original, but it’s a sweet listen and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Maybe a bit too country sounding at times for my taste, and none of the songs feel really distinctive minus the 2nd and last ones.
