Genesis Owusu - REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE
94

Genesis achieves a very difficult balance on this album; It doesn't take a genius to see the messaging in this one, and it doesn't take much thought to enjoy it either. On REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE, Owusu is heavily political. He jabs voter hivemind, conservative bigotry, and the scourge of grifter "culture" throughout this whole album, and he makes it sound pretty damn good too. On STRUGGLER we really saw Genesis delve into and embrace a hard dance-punk sound ... read more

The Scratch - Pull Like a Dog

Around Mother of God this started to sound like QOTSA to me so I locked in and restarted for a proper listen and man this thing rocks. Love the Irish vocal inflections, the spaciness of every song, the drums and the pacing of the album as a whole. While I liked the album as a whole, the songs are kinda just fine on their own and nothing more. To put it simply there’s no bangers I fear.

Something I noticed is aesthetically it has some strong similarities to mid 2010’s alternative ... read more

demleague - Tether Me to You

Noise pop is typically a very hit-or-miss genre for me. It often lacks readability (being able to hear and make sense of lyrics and vocals) which doesn't usually do it a lot of favors despite being a main appeal. But it has to have noise and static, which is also an appeal. Finding a balance between the two is a rarity. Some people pull it off but that doesn't automatically make it good. So, how do you separate yourself? You have to add something, and something this album adds is ... read more

Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth

38 minutes of the same bassline and guitar riff accompanied by the same quiet vocals. 38 minutes of getting edged before being left blueballed. Decently chill listen though despite that.

Footings - The Worm Moon
70

Some nice, slow, folk-y, post rock. Was really digging around when I stumbled across a song off here, and I liked it enough to give the album a go. Doesn’t do anything particularly original, but it’s a sweet listen and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Maybe a bit too country sounding at times for my taste, and none of the songs feel really distinctive minus the 2nd and last ones.

Renatto Olivares - Aguas Raras

Like 5 seconds into hearing the vocals I went "wait this sounds familiar", and because it was: I had no idea this guy was the vocalist for the art/jazz/prog/whatever-rock band Hesse-Kassel, who had one of my favorite debut albums last year. And then on the second track I said the same thing again, because I shit you not, you make the vocals Japanese and not Spanish and you just have betcover!!. The similarity was not only apparent, but kind of overshadowing."Viroca" could ... read more

Home Front - Watch It Die
71

Probably the album that has managed to echo the sound of the post-punk of the 80’s and 90’s more directly than any other of the past few years. And it does this while still having multiple songs that are closer to the synthy and punchy punk of the modern era, and I should add that Home Front did really well no matter what sound they tried to present. However while it is pretty consistent overall, I found the album to blur together and not in a satisfying way. Though the energy of ... read more

Dry Cleaning - Secret Love
40

I used to think dry cleaning just wasn’t for me, now I recognize them as one of the most emotionless slop churners to ever hit post punk.

Injury Reserve - By the Time I Get to Phoenix
67

Cannot stand the sound of this album at times but the lyrical content of it is undeniably masterful.

The Orchestra (For Now) - Plan 76
90

Incredibly unpredictable prog-rock, whenever I thought it was going one direction it would go another, this happens like 10 times per song. Very dense much like their last ep, but the arrangement and strings are on another level here.

Dead Calm - Keep Moving
85

I adore this album, it’s only going to grow on me more as time passes. Slump is probably the closest to home that a song has hit me in a very, very long while. Procrastination, self deprecation and apathy have plagued my daily life for a while, and it touched those with so few words yet so much emotion.

Casiopea - Mint Jams
92

Some of the grooviest bass ever man. Nothing more to say

Sabrina Carpenter - Man's Best Friend
65

Feels like this album only exists to capitalize off of her current popularity as it doesn't do anything particularly new. I'll commend her and her team for touching on different styles in some songs but the execution is lackluster. By far the best part is the instrumentation. Very progressive and orchestral at times although it is quite fleeting and too often forced to the background.

Touchdown Jesus - It’s All Feast or Famine
95

This is what art punk should sound like.

Review coming soon.

betcover!! - 勇気 [Yuki]

I had no clue this thing even dropped and I'm so glad I do now.

This was an insanely pleasant surprise for me. I adore this band, especially Jiro Yanase. He's a brilliant song writer and his vocals are so distinct. That applies to this album just like all of the band's previous work. This album is definitely the most distinct that the band has made thus far. It leans heavy into jazz and the songs have the same linear fashion the band has had before, but the music itself is much ... read more

Viagra Boys - viagr aboys
93

I relate to this album because I also scare women away with ww2 factoids.

Here it is! one of my most anticipated releases for a very, very long time, and boy it did not disappoint. Viagra Boys are one of my favorite bands and have been for a few years now, they're fun, brash, conscious, and most importantly, really fucking good. V boys are really good at honing in on present issues of society, but less so economics, environment and corruption, and more so the stupidity of it all. ... read more

Fontaines D.C. - Romance (Deluxe Edition)

Both It's Amazing To Be Young and Before You I Just Forget are really good songs and I think they fit with the overall vibe of the album perfectly. If I had it my way I would've put them on the original release, somewhere in the latter third of the track, and keep Favourite as the closer.

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
89

Black Country, New Road pulled the opposite of what Black Midi did last year (leave it to me to bring them up when they have nothing to do with things), instead of the frontman going off on his own to carry the torch, the folks of BCNR stepped up in the absence of frontman Isaac Wood. The women who take the reigns on this album, Georgia, Tyler and May do a fantastic job of capturing the longing inflection of Wood. Though it doesn't quite hit the same spot he did for me, the three of them ... read more

Courting - Lust for Life, Or: How To Thread The Needle And Come Out The Other Side To Tell The Story
79

What a fun little listen. I wasn’t that big on Courting’s previous album, especially after loving Guitar Music so much. There isn’t really a theme or certain sound this goes for, just a bunch of songs thrown in. But, the songs are overall pretty fun and well done. It’s a short album, like really short, but I dig it enough that I can see myself returning and adding some of these to a few playlists.

Cheekface - Middle Spoon
77

More of the same from Cheekface. An improvement from their last album as far as consistency goes, but it doesn’t do much better or different aside from that. Still perfectly fun and enjoyable.
