Politically charged aggressive hip-hop from Immortal Technique with some great punchlines. Point of No Return is a great pump up song that has you ready to fight the system, and You Never Know is one of the best story-telling rap songs I’ve heard recently with a gut-wrenching finale. Harlem Streets and Peruvian Cocaine tackle in two different manners the reality of drugs impacting communities in America, and Leaving the Past has a beautiful jazz instrumental that softens the mood ... read more
Beautiful chill Jazz-rap album with multiple highlights perfect for a late night drive. Same Shit has a rhythmic trancelike flow from Isaiah Rashad and is a stand-out track with multiple bangers early, including a beautiful song Boy in Red with SZA with chill lover vibes. Ain’t giving up this high is a beautiful poetic, sad jazz song about addiction. Superficial and MOM are both chill, easy, listening, hip-hop, alongside GTKY. Act Normal and Nuthing 2 Hide have more emotion to them which ... read more
Angry aggressive political rap-rock that doesn’t reach the highs of its predecessor but is still a strong album. Bulls on Parade is the highlight and is a classic rap-rock banger with anti war-lobby imagery and almost DJ-scratching guitar solo. Down Rodeo has a punk-rock funky vibe with whiny licks, and Revolver builds nicely from whispers into militant choruses. Roll Right is an iconic leftist chanting chorus with beautiful guitar kicks from Tom Morello. Snakecharmer and Tire Me’s ... read more
Raw and uncohesive LP from Everything is Recorded. The intro song Close but not Quite is a reasonable R&B song, and Early this Morning has Giggs’s dark manic menacing energy paired with a crooning chorus and thumping background drums. Washed up on the Shore is too experimental for my taste and is almost grating - perhaps this is the point of the track. Delusion is the highlight of the EP and pairs a glitchy electronic instrumental with R&B style vocals and thematic vocal samples. ... read more
James Blake combines his beautiful emotionally-evocative vocals with sometimes interesting production to put together a good art-pop alt R&B album. Ballads such as Trying Times and Death of Love as well as interludes such as Obsession and Feel It Again are the core of the album down pat with haunting piano melodies. Dave’s feature verse is a stand-out on the album as a significant point of differentiation, with a lot of the rest of the songs on the album lacking a certain je ne sais ... read more
