black midi - Hellfire

Even compared to black midi's previous works, "Hellfire" is an extremely wild and out-there rock album with a very fitting album cover and title.

The instrumental work is as tight and catchy as they have ever been on black midi album. The lyrical themes across the album are fantastic in storytelling, all dealing with individuals who are doomed to go to hell through their actions. Like with "Dangerous Liaisons" being about a farmhand who gets tricked by Satan to kill someone and gets dragged down to hell. The lyrics on "The Race Is About to Begin" tells the story of "Tristan Bongo" who appeared earlier on the album getting addicted to horse betting for 30 years and giving up on life. The vocal performances are extremely varied and reflect the lyrics and tone of each song.

All of those coupled with the unpredictability of each song's structure and progression really can leave the listener feeling... well, like they're in hell.
