The S.E.T. - Self Evident Truth
54

The stuff happening with Brady Ebert (ex-Turnstile, ex-this band, now alleged attempted murderer) is WAY more interesting than anything on this project.

What we have here is an incredibly boring beatdown tape. Nothing here is done that isn't better than in other projects, even other projects from Baltimore. This is a band that is both trying to be Trapped Under Ice but also doesn't understand what makes Trapped Under Ice so good. It's only 15 minutes, but as soon as I finished ... read more

xforever warx - Upon the Weak and Broken
79

If you're from Salt Lake City, you are either Mormon or in a Straight Edge band, but either way, you are NOT DRINKING ALCOHOL

Really cool project. I happened to listen to Kickback for the first time right before this, so it's pretty cool to see the direct result of Kickback's influence with a band named after Forever War. Anyways, I don't have much else to say about this. Great riffs, good pace, one of my favorite eps of the year so far.

Kanye West - BULLY
45

Look, I get the arguments people are making about how we shouldn't expect a flawless album from a guy who had one of the most public mental breaks in a hot minute. But he's got enough people around him to at least finish the damn album.

The ideas on this album sound like someone else tried to make a "classic" Kanye record by redoing what worked in the past. But absolutely nothing feels finished. Barely any song passes 3 minutes in length, and the features feel like they are ... read more

Slayyyter - WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA
83

Having never done drugs before, I feel like my listening to this is stolen valor.

This is my first Slayyyter album I've heard, and man, this is just banger after banger. I like the dive into electro-industrial on tracks like YES GODDD and CRANK, it gives the album more depth than just being a good time. But the good time is definitely present. This album feels like a disheveled upper that will drag you to "the good time" kicking and screaming. Where the album falters is in some ... read more

BTS - ARIRANG
38

Yeah, this album definitely sounds like 100 different people worked on it.

This album is like everyone started throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what stuck, but there was still a ton of spaghetti on the ground, and it rotted. The point is, this album is all over the place, flushed with ideas but without any lasting or memorable songwriting to back it up. Hooligan is incredibly funny, and deadass sounds like Vultures to me. As a comeback record, I think this was an abstract failure. ... read more

Ronnie, Donnie, and Johnny - Aura Farming Simulator
56

What is here is promising, but I wish these guys had taken their debut project a bit more seriously.

I don't mean that I dislike people having fun with their projects, not at all. I enjoy a bit of Slam, and that entire genre is basically one inside joke. But I think that the jokiness of this project bleeds into the songwriting. Nothing stands out in a meaningful way, and the passages that do work feel sparse. Also, I know this is a mathcore/brutal prog debut EP, but it just doesn't ... read more

Blistered Spirit - Through Shattered Light
73

Thank you twitter for the random Metalcore rec in the middle of my day.

This is just an incredibly solid tape from a band that clearly has its sound on lock. The balance of the more melodic passages makes the deathcore elements hit much harder, and I'm happy Blistered Spirit knows how to play with different levels of intensity. Again, just a good tape overall. Would recommend.

Neurosis - An Undying Love for a Burning World
86

Man, I hate metal cause what do you mean, Neurosis is back because of ISIS.

All jokes aside, I listened to Through Silver And Blood last week for the first time, believing that Neurosis was another band of the past. Knowing the gross shit Scott Kelly did paint the band in a not-so-great light. But And Undying Love for a Burning World is new. It's fresh. It shows that the success of Neurosis was because of how damn good the songwriting really is. Aaron Turner is a great addition to the ... read more

Poison the Well - Peace In Place
80

If I had a nickel for every time a legendary metalcore band from the late 90s early 2000s dropped a record in 2026 that was as quality as the material they were putting out in their prime, I would have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's pretty cool that it happened twice.

This is a very distinctive comeback record, as it combines modern sensibilities with the songwriting that established their importance in the first place. Comparing this to The Opposite of December, we find a ... read more

Jack Harlow - Monica
50

EDIT: 65 --> 50 I never once in my life have gone back to listen to anything from this project, so I figured it would be necessary to doc this one a bit.

Jack Harlow has finally figured out how to make music that is not self-parody, and it's not bad. A very sleepy R&B record is definitely a path that has a lot of good to come out of it. However, this feels like a surface-level version of what I imagined Jack thought he was making. The instrumentation often feels like the ... read more

Harry Styles - Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.
79

Welcome back 2012 indie music.

I genuinely mean this in a good way, but this is Sirius XMU worship. Harry Styles wears his influences on his sleeves for this project, and I think it has resulted in some of his strongest songwriting to date. Apeture is a mix of LCD Soundsystem and Tune-Yards, and Carla's Song is The Postal Service. When it feels like everyone is drawing inspiration from Arctic Monkeys nowadays, this is genuinely refreshing. Is this representative that the next Harry Styles ... read more

The Scythe - Strictly 4 The Scythe
71

People who are comparing this to Melt My Eyez should have their ear privileges revoked.

Putting it simply, this is a shorter, less varied KOTMSV2. Everyone's performance on this project work, and nothing sticks out as bad or a weak link; the songwriting as a whole just is not all there. I don't really think Denzel Curry or his collaborators can miss, but they can fail to meet the tremendously high expectations he has already set. Still a very solid release.

Bruno Mars - The Romantic
62

Silly Bruno, you wrote these songs before!

It is really funny how Bruno is Shaq on the Lakers when it comes to singles, but the album songs are like Shaq on the Celtics (it's not THAT bad, but you get the point.) There is really not much to say. Bruno Mars isn't taking risks on here, and that is kind of disappointing. He can make near-perfect pop music, but the songwriting here feels board-certified. Nothing is bad, but nothing really stands out either.

Mitski - Nothing's About to Happen to Me
86

I'm gonna sound like a 5-year-old, but I don't care: I really like the parts in Mitski songs where it's loud.

To say that more eloquently, Mitski's absolute strongest trait to me is her inter-song dynamics. Every song she puts out on any given album is so lush with strong, complete ideas. Nothing's About to Happen to Me is a great example, as so many of these songs are perfect examples of that. Combine that with her usual excellent song-writing, and you've got one ... read more

Angel Du$t - Cold 2 The Touch
67

Songwriting is good, performances are good, it doesn't overstay its welcome, but man, I wish it were heavier. Maybe it's my love for Trapped Under Ice and Turnstile (yeah, I didn't love their last one, but shout-out to them anyway), but I wish this thing had more riffs. This isn't just me being like "play like Sunami I love Sunami" cause that's not what I mean. I just realized how little stands out when there isn't the catchiness of a good riff. Still ... read more

Baby Keem - Ca$ino
73

Baby Keem still got it, kinda.

The issues I have with this album are more reflective of how good The Melodic Blue really was. I'm really happy Baby Keem is taking a more personal angle to his music, but I think the songwriting on this record took a hit. Each song is either an example of why Baby Keem is one of the most exciting artists out there or an idea that should've been worked on longer. Especially considering it's been 5 years since The Melodic Blue, I feel like Baby Keem ... read more

Charli xcx - Wuthering Heights
77

"I love you, Heathcliff." BWOOOOAAHHMMMMM AHHHHHHHHHHH

This is a really cool follow-up to Brat (I know it's a soundtrack layoff me) that showcases why Charli xcx is really all that. The experimentation is cranked up higher than it was on Brat, and the stylistic combination of more classical passages with heavy synth leads creates a massive soundscape. By nature of it being a soundtrack, I feel the songwriting ends up being aimless at points because the focus is something beyond ... read more

Converge - Love Is Not Enough
94

The boys have done it again.

God damn, this album is refreshing. Everything works here for me. The aggression, the production, the instrumentation, the experimentation, the songwriting, it's all some of Converge's best. Love Is Not Enough feels like the synthesis of the different eras of Converge. It takes from the Jane Doe era, the Axe To Fall era, and even the Petitioning era. Maybe (just maybe) this is the inner Converge fanboy in me, but even after 11 albums, they are still ... read more

Mayhem - Liturgy of Death
62

Thank you Hellhammer very cool.

Mayhem is a band that I think is held more in infammy then in high regard. I haven't listened to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (I'm not all that interested in black metal as a genre), but I've heard some good things. Beyond that, Mayhem is known way more for all the schenanigans that went down than for the music they actually made. Which brings us to today, where the Mayhem that exists now is just a fine black metal band. This album is very ... read more

Joji - Piss In The Wind
55

Shit In The (My) Ass

Every song is either too short or too long, no idea goes the full distance, and every song is devoid of identity. Besides that, Piss In The Wind sounds nice. I really don't have much to say. Every song blends together too much. This album sounds like a collection of demos. Man, I REALLY don't have much to say. Ummm... this album reminded me that 4batz exists. I guess that's something.
