I'd never heard of this artist until this album, and was pleasantly surprised by my listen, with it's thick guitar tone really helping to incapsulate that thick, deeper water feel. I was mixed on the vocals when they were more melodic, but I love the growling vocals on this album. The best way to describe this is The Great Cold Distance by Katatonia meets Meshuggah. My favorite songs are probably the last 3, and especially Demersal, though I've got to give credit to Benthic for ... read more
I'm not venturing to call this album sloppily made, poorly produced or anything of the sorts, infact I'm a fan of a lot of the ideas on this record, but the amount of dissonance and the inability to resolve is pretty obnoxious. It leads me to prefer the non-metal aspects of the record over the metal ones, though I do like the ending portion of The Manifold Curiosity. I'd say my favorite track is probably Wayfarer. If this album was slightly less experimental I think I'd have ... read more
If you're just getting into Nu Metal as a newer metalhead, I'd definitely recommend this record because it has cleaner production and probably the best/catchiest songwriting out of Ill Nino's discography. With that said, it's still pretty run of the mill Nu Metal record, and even though it features very interesting Hispanic influences on the instrumentation and what I'd say pretty good vocals, the lyrics can be seen as dated and even at times aggressive, like the lyric ... read more
I believe Static-X made one of the most unique Nu Metal Albums and had one of the most signature styles when it came to their first 2 releases, and being their first and favorite record of mine, I've spent the most time listening to Wisconsin Death Trip, so here's what I'll note. For starters it's a very repetitive record and a good amount of the track sound pretty similar. Even still, there are some truly fantastic standouts on this record, like Stem, Push It, and I'm ... read more
This is definitely Katatonia's best release as a more alternative metal band, and it's not really close, as their later records would fall into the same pitfalls and most metal artists do past a certain point having generic production and lackluster ideas, and their previous 4 records all kind of meld together to me. The Great Cold Distance is by far Katatonia's catchiest album, really only rivalled by Discouraged Ones, and not only is it catchy, but it's very well produced. ... read more
