Finally i got around to writing my review for ts. This is less of a review and more of like, my thoughts on the album track by track. With a little paragraph dedicated to how I'd describe this thing.
Won't ever find me has a catchy lead melody and a pretty grand opening, overall good structure. It's solid.
It transitions perfectly into godspeed which has an AMAZING groove and features some really unique percussions. The feature (sorry bro I can't pronounce or type out your name) did amazing considering a huge portion of the track was made in FL studio mobile, according to dmytro himself. Which is kinda insane, i really wish more tracks on the album pivoted this much in terms of uniqueness and diversity. I think that would've made for a more interesting listen. It also features these ethereal, panning pads and an amazing switch up on the last leg with this weird ass rhythm that i really like, one of the best on the album.
This also transitions perfectly transition into shine. Which features some unique drums (which still feels dnb overall but has a unique enough break mixed with the drum programming that makes all the difference) with this prominent kick pattern and subtle switch ups throughout the track and a great lead melody with synths on the back end. It contributes really well to the overall vibe in my opinion.
Satellite with deso features a much more slowed down break which gives it a boom bap feel over a melody that sounds like it could've been featured on one of the many glitch hop highlights on deso's last mixtape. The melody on the first half takes a backseat while the drums drive the track but it's still interesting enough to be essential to the song, the second half of the song transitions into this silly fusion of glitch hop and dnb with these watery sound design mutations and a pretty standard drum break. It's one of the highlights.
The dog, the bark on the other hand sounds much more like a standard dnb cut and feels like it could've been one of the big highlights from TLWNFM. It sounds like a track from that album too but improved. It showcases a combination of arps and ethereal pads with an amazingly groovy drum break on the switch up during the second half. It doesn't take many risks, but it's good with the execution and was probably the best choice dmytro could've made for a lead single
And then it perfectly transitions into cocoon Which has amazing arps, just like the previous track. They're much more prominent here and i'd say they breath a lot of life into an otherwise generic dnb track. It doesn't offer a whole lot structurally but it sounds great while it's on. THE ARPS.
Midnight ruffles with dead fave is one of my favourites from the tracklist with its atmospheric instrumentation and consistent drums. A nighttime-walking-through-the-city essential. It's groovy but also laid back. And makes me feel pretty nostalgic and melancholic.
The song telepath has a unique lead melody with what sounds like high pitched synth leads to me. They sound good. But it's not necessarily an interesting track until it reaches its final leg where it gets some extra instrumentation to make the mix sound more interesting. But it's still not a skip at all, far from it.
Flora doesn't do a whole lot for me in the first half, but the second half of flora features these side chained, compressed and kinda distorted busy-ish kicks which sound really interesting to my ears. And is absolutely worth listening to because it starts the best transition in the tracklist in its final few seconds.
pareidolia is the song that it transitions into, Which is one of the more unique tracks on the album with its lack of drums for most of the song and total focus on melodies. Even when the drums come in they're comparatively more minimal. The soundscape features these really spacey synths and a backdrop of chimes over a bed of pads and it makes for a much needed shift in the approach to the structures of these songs.
The next song, sunburn features this really catchy lead. And pretty prominent drums. But by this point the sound that the song tries to present, gets pretty repetitive. For the majority of its runtime, the song sounds pretty good, however, the part i enjoy the most is the outro where it transforms into this sonic bliss of pads and strings and these subtle woodwinds that feel very saudade coded. Production breakdown please
And finally, the last song Ascention doesn't really get that interesting until the 3 minute mark, and even then it doesn't match the quality of the other songs on this album. That is, until the four minute mark where the song evolves around these dreamy vocal samples, it flows really nicely and stays engaging while introducing these unique percussive elements around the 6 minute mark that stay for a very short period of time and then the track goes on to introduce this really pretty and angelic ambient portion that stays for less than a minute but sounds heavenly and leads to a great drop with clean drums and a really hypnotic vocal sample in the back that pairs very well with the drums and works nicely with the rest of the instrumentation. The track loses a bit of steam for me in the next minute but to its credit, it manages to stay active by showcasing some great drum chops. I would've expected a bit more out of the ending and the track overall but it still manages to do a great job with everything that could go wrong.
Overall, this entire album feels like you're walking through a dystopian late stage capitalism plagued consumer driven cyberpunk-esque city with an immense wealth inequality where the night never really ends. Both literally and metaphorically. It's much more diverse compared to its predecessor. Also, some serious work and thought was put into the song transitions on this album cause nearly all these songs flow into each other with the exception of a few. And i think that makes for a really pleasant listening experience. My Main criticism with this album is that i feel like it could've been more diverse track by track, cause sometimes the dnb sound gets pretty old but that's not a big problem with how concise the tracklist is. A really great album.
