There are moments of brilliance here, and it truly feels like a return to what I love about Anna von Hausswolff's music after the overwhelming 'All Thoughts Fly'. However, this feels more like a collage of ideas rather than a singular, coherent vision. I can enjoy all the tracks for what they are, but after listening back to front several times, I find the flow jarring at points and not in a complementary way. I'll keep listening, it is a wonderfully complex, layered album, ... read more
Any reason to revisit one of the best pop albums of all time is appreciated, especially with new tracks included.
There is just something about Jack Ladder's releases post Blue Pillars that lacks charm and enthusiasm that first made him so exciting. Sure, there are flairs of it, but the album overall feels like it just kind of meanders. This would be fine if it had some atmospheric charm to it, but even as background music it does not really set a clear 'vibe' and just feels kind of sorrowful. I'll draw an arbitrary comparison here to 'The Saxophones' who craft a slightly ... read more
There is an ethereal sadness to this album that I find utterly charming—very stripped back pop rock music, which I tend to have a soft spot for.
What a bleak gem. Won't be able to listen to this on repeat, but when I want a bit of doom and gloom in my life, along the lines of Swans, this will be a new go-to.
It's a case of just not vibing with me, but I can appreciate the musical mastery here. Deserved of its must-listen status.
As a writer who listens to albums while he works, I can confirm the album's claim in the title. Not my usual type of atmospheric music I dig, but I couldn't help but check it out on title and found it blended in wonderfully as I typed away.
The songs here are charming, a balance of cleverness and cuteness backed by the strong vocals of Hobert. However, the music production feels dated. Be curious to see where Hobert goes on her sophomore album, but this lacks the punch needed to break through.
By no means a stand-out, but there are some exceptionally pretty songs on here that make it worth a listen
I, too, love my computer. I also like upbeat and sporadic electronic music with heart and humor.
Not quite the follow-up one would hope for after a five-year absence, but a solid release all around.
Revisited this while I was writing a piece on that awful new movie adaptation. That said, I am always surprised, once I listen to this from start to finish every other year, how much of a masterpiece it is.
A new direction for Deeby Friday from the previous album, Good Luck, which was much more dance/club oriented. This one is... just okay. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if it were as high-energy as her last album. No song on this album hits as hard as "I Got It."
Revisiting this decades later on a whim as a random song got stuck in my head, Gerling's 'Bad Blood' is very much a product of its time. There is an odd clash between a punk aesthetic and polished production that somewhat loses some of its appeal due to its implied rebellious nature. Is it bad? Not at all, and there are some killer tracks here, but it is so painfully 2000's alternative that there are elements that are difficult to take seriously. Still, it is fun to rock ... read more
The Kristen Stewart featured song 'Who Laughs Last' is probably the worst thing Lord Huron has ever put out; that alone knocks off some points. That said, the album remains inconsistent overall, with moments of greatness marred by some lows. This feels like a step back for the band, in the way they are trying to move forward and refine their sound a bit. One listen was enough; I will add a few tracks to a mix and then go back to listening to 'Strange Trails' or 'Long ... read more
A few tracks are duds, but songs like "Story" and "You and Me" are pure and utter perfection.
These are the type of punk lyrics that would generally make me cringe, celebrating laziness, setting a low bar for oneself as a means of rebellion, and focusing on promiscuity. Mind you, not all tracks, but enough to make it feel like a pervasive theme. I am also not a traditionalist; I just find lyrics like this generally insufferable.
That said, there is enough charm here; the lyrics are catchy, and a prevailing sense of humor keeps it from feeling too indulgent. A pleasant surprise in a ... read more
Midwife is in my top ten bands of all time, off the few releases she has put out. That is why this is so disappointing, the project of the collaboration is less than both projects, and I could not even get into Jenick's experimental sound on his previous albums. It is not a bad album, but why listen to this when you can revisit any of Midwife's other albums?
