Love her or hate her, Charli’s influence on the girls has breadth. There is a lot to appreciate on this record, probably my favorite of Kim’s so far. It seems it excels best in the more personal, pure pop, electro influenced moments like Brutalist, rather than the girliepop hyperpop moments that just dont hit like some previous attempts or other artist’ iterations. That said, there is a lot of great production on this, and it has a good variety of sound. Sometimes it leans ... read more
TRAFOAMP is a true defining record of the 2020s and a wonderful addition to the fantastic debut albums from amazing new artists club. It represents pop culture, queer culture, and the state of pop music so well. It has everything a great record can have: fun, thoughtful lyrics, incredible production, insanely catchy hooks, soaring melodies, bombastic vocals, and stunning harmonies. Tracks that take over the culture and will be remembered for years to come. So exciting to see a young artist ... read more
This album really oscillates for me as a listener. It has such beautiful, creative, inspired highs. And the lows, the interludes, they don’t all work for me. This album is so smooth and so listenable. While not every track is hard hitting per se, the productions, the vocal layering, the harmonies, the melodies are so satisfying. There is a nice narrative arc here, and Ariana doing this softer pop works well with Max Martin’s glittering instrumentals. I love how cosmic the whole project feels. While not a soaring high, this is such a lovely project in her discography.
Nostalgia does part of the work, and Max Martin’s insanely smart and catchy production does the rest. This was a cultural phenomenon. This was a moment in time. Living through this era was incredible, this is an album of certified hits. Katy commits to the bit and it works wonders. The tongue in cheek lyrics and visuals, the scrumptious harmonies, the simple but effortlessly effective production. This is 2010 in an album. Certainly not perfect, but certainly one of the modern testaments ... read more
