This album is a masterpiece, it truly changed my music taste. Before listening to currents, i only liked hip hop and rap, maybe some pop, but that was it. Nothing outside of rap truly fascinated me, but this album felt different, the cover really pulled me in tbh.
The way Kevin handles a breakup album is fascinating. It isn’t like most albums regarding that theme, where the artist blames their partner and keeps on saying the same shitty thing about them for an hour. It is like being put into the mind of the protagonist (in my opinion, this album is like a collection of different stories regarding heartbreak) and seeing what they did wrong and their regrets.
Currents has a song for each stage of a breakup: let it happen for moving on, eventually for grief, the moment for the anticipation of the breakup itself and so on.
Sonicall speaking, this album is mind blowing. Kevin’s lush vocals combined with the trippy production make this album a very mesmerizing experience.
That’s enough for the album itself, now I wanna talk about how it changed my music taste. After listening to this, I started to wonder what other genres I might like, so I tried listening to shoegaze, metal, some jazz and more. Because of this album i found my favorite record of all time (Velocity Design Comfort) and basically all the music i listen to nowadays.
Overall, this album is peak music ๐
