I think potentially my favourite of the three Portishead studio albums, whilst the sophomore saw the sound of the debut expanding the bands Trip Hop sounds to be a deeply atmospheric and unnerving almost noir movie in feel of an album, this album feels almost mechanical and crushing in the way it adapts the bands sound
It also has some of my favorite Portishead songs, Silence is a deeply unsettling album opener, Hunter carries on in the same directions whilst starting to introduce the listener to the machine like feel. Nylon Smile might be one of my favourites on the album. The Rip has such a beautiful and emotional vocal delivery. Plastic is one of the heavier songs on the album and continues this with We Carry On. Machine Gun feels like being smashed by a compressor. The last few songs are all pretty great too
I do have some minor grievances, the song Deep Water feels a bit out of place on the album and sticks out as being the weakest and I think the last quarter is somewhat weaker than the first three
Overall a fantastic album and well worthy of a listen
