On some days this is my favourite portishead album. This thing is insanely cinematic and refuses to fit into any sort of genre, encompassing so many styles along the way but executing them all in such a unique and inventive way. It's incredibly dark and at some points genuinely scary, some of these songs feel like they're trying to crawl directly through your ears and into your brain with how haunting and confrontational they are, but there's still that melancholia and odd beauty that make this band so recognisable. It's an incredibly complete and well-crafted album that truly feels like a journey every time I listen to it, and I wish it was talked about more.
