I listened to this on a walk in the cemetery next to my house.
Cemeteries are places of death and gloom, places where the dead go to be remembered and eventually forgotten. But they're also places of life. The one local to me is full of trees and birds and flower bushes and so incredibly vibrant and beautiful despite being so full of death.
'Inferno' is that cemetery. It's incredibly dark and sinister, more so than anything Boards of Canada have made before. It delves into ... read more
Idk man this song just fills me with such nostalgia and joy. An absolutely perfect amalgamation of synthy and shoegazey elements that creates just an absolutely perfect sound. And the break into that saxophone solo at the end omg. Utter perfection
WE ARE SO BACK.
This song is fantastic. One of their most sinister sounding tracks ever with such an incredibly smooth sound palette. Nostalgic as ever while still putting a new spin on the bands sound. Almost reminiscent of Geogaddi with its dark atmosphere and vocal sample, but with an updated production that suits them brilliantly. I can't remember the last time I was this excited for an album.
Electropunk is one of those genres that's never quite clicked with me. Some parts of this album border on overly edgy or annoying, but it also has a few of the funnest instrumentals I've heard all year so far. I think it's at its best when the instrumentals get a bit more melodic and experimental rather than just a constant barrage of noise. I'm also not huge on the vocal style, but it fits tracks like 'Shoplifting' extremely well. Idk maybe I need to listen to ... read more
My personal favourite Fugazi record and one that I find so incredibly satisfying with every listen. Much more abrasive than their previous releases without losing any of their trademark sound. From the incredibly hype intro of Facet Squared this album feels like a constant punch to the face, and it almost never lets up across it's runtime. The social commentary and sound is a lot more direct, which I think majorly benefits the experience as it just makes the songs hit that much harder. ... read more
This has some of my favourite Big Thief tracks ever, with a few of their most gorgeous melodies, especially on the title track and Cattails. Adrianne's voice is as gorgeous as ever, and the musicianship is undeniably excellent. My problem with this album is that the tracks that aren't highlights really do not stand out. It's far quieter than their other albums from front to back, almost feeling like it refuses to experiment with the dynamics and variation that make records like ... read more
A monumental achievement of a pop album. Almost every track on this album is insanely iconic and it contains several of my favourites of all time.
How does someone hear Stockholm Syndrome and honestly think this band are comparable to Radiohead in any way
On some days this is my favourite portishead album. This thing is insanely cinematic and refuses to fit into any sort of genre, encompassing so many styles along the way but executing them all in such a unique and inventive way. It's incredibly dark and at some points genuinely scary, some of these songs feel like they're trying to crawl directly through your ears and into your brain with how haunting and confrontational they are, but there's still that melancholia and odd beauty ... read more
For me this encapsulates a lot of what makes Queens such a great band. I love the blend of the heavier rockers with much more mellow and spacey tracks, it's a chaotic blend of sounds that they pull off effortlessly. They'd explore some of these sounds better on Songs for the Deaf, but this is still an excellent rock album by any standard.
A much more difficult listen than the other fugazi albums I've heard so far and one I'm unsure how to feel about. Way more slow-burning and dark than their other albums, with probably my favourite lyrics on a fugazi album yet. There aren't as many tracks with the energy and aggression that made albums like In On The Kill Taker so appealing to me, but a lot of the experimentation pays off super well with some of the darkest and most affecting post-hardcore songs I've heard. ... read more
Every few years I visit my grandparents in Australia. It's something I always look forward to and I have so many incredible memories tied to it, and it's truly the place I feel happiest. They have a massive Beatles collection which is what helped me properly discover their music when I was about 9, and the album that undoubtedly caught my ear the most is Revolver. Every time I put this album on, I'm back in their bungalow looking at the birds in their garden, or driving through ... read more
Pretty much as good as a singer-songwriter album of this era can get. The songs are catchy and instantly memorable while also being hilarious and idiosyncratic in their lyricism. The production from Jackson Browne is clean and everything sounds insanely crisp, and the session musicians are phenomenal. Warren's piano playing and voice are so fun and so confident that you can feel just how much passion he put into the writing of these songs. Its shortness also aids it well as it feels like 9 ... read more
Foo Fighters are the band that got me into music so I have a huge emotional bias towards them, but even so I think this is a phenomenal alt rock record and a true testament to Dave's talent that he wrote, recorded and produced these songs all by himself. I love the shoegaze elements on tracks like 'X-static' and 'Exhausted', two of my favourite Foo songs ever. It's a shame that sound never really got explored again by them. There's also hugely catchy bangers ... read more
Au pays du cocaine hit me so hard that I'm actually scared to come back to it. Anyway this is one of the best things I've heard in ages. I started laughing at several points cause I couldn't process what I was hearing, and I still can't quite.
Quite possibly their best since 'Wish' or even 'Disintegration.' Seriously this thing deserves to be right up there with their most acclaimed albums. The songs are so atmospheric and powerful as well as packing one of the hardest emotional punches of any Cure album. 'I Can Never Say Goodbye' hits me harder with every listen. 'And Nothing is Forever' is an absolute epic of a song. This whole thing is insanely consistent with no filler whatsoever, and just ... read more
Easy to see why this has become so iconic in the Cure discography. 'Play For Today' and 'A Forest' are perfect pieces of post-punk and gothic rock. 'At Night' is one of the the most eerie songs I've ever heard. Even the interludes do a great job at creating such a gloomy atmosphere. Not as consistent as what they would go on to do, but a fantastic blueprint for their sound going forward.
I went into this expecting the worst thing ever, and I honestly don't dislike it much at all. I had a lot more fun with this than I was expecting to, and there's a lot of potential in most of the songs and the theatrical concept. Songs like 'Time to Dance' are insanely catchy even if they're not exactly masterpieces in their own right. Brendan sounds good here and his typically irritating voice lends itself to the sound here surprisingly well. However I do think a lot ... read more
