I was absolutely stunned by this
Few songwriters are as good at writing lyrics that cut to the fucking soul the way Adrienne Lenker is. Every song here tells a heartbreaking story with confrontational yet gorgeous lyrics that perfectly illustrate the complexity of human emotion. I've not heard an album with each track being this distinctly memorable in a while.
Holy fucking shit this album rocks
Everything about this is over the top in the best way possible. The guitars feel like they're trying to claw their way out of their own album with their insanely distorted tones and discordant yet melodic riffs. The way the two guitarists compliment each others parts is fantastic. Cedrics vocals are some of the most furious and insane I've heard on any album and he injects so much passion and raw energy into some of the most nonsensical but ... read more
Definitely a slow burner of a debut especially considering the stuff they would do immediately after, but there are some absolute bangers here and the bands energy is very clear right out of the gate. Some slower noisier rockers such as 'whiteliberalonwhiteliberalaction' and 'world cup drumming' are balanced with faster punk tracks like 'joy' and 'rice is nice', as well as 'flysmoke' and 'medium is the message' which are surprisingly ... read more
Deerhoof are a band I've been really interested in for ages so I'm finally getting around to listening to all their albums.
This is a weeeeird album, gets overwhelmingly harsh or just too weird at several points but there's some gorgeous moments underneath all the chaos. The lo fi production fits the noise pop style of these songs super well and it's a fun starting point for the band which shows the creativity and songwriting talent they had from the beginning. Plus there ... read more
Definitely a fun listen but I couldn't help feel a bit let down after the insane 4 album run it followed up
Ended up liking this more than Slip even though that seems to be the more acclaimed album. I loved how diverse and aggressive this was in comparison and the songs felt much more developed and catchy.
Fantastically produced and incredibly well played, this album really shows how good the Police were at what they did. The opening 6-track run is near flawless and even though the second half isn't as strong, it's still a super entertaining and well written pop album overall
Saw these guys open for the chats last year and they were fantastic so I was very excited for this and it definitely met expectations. Just some really fun and well-made power pop and hard rock tunes
Honestly hurts as a lifelong Biffy fan to give this album this score, but it feels like they've lost everything about them that made them interesting and have just resorted to making overproduced and cheesy arena rock. No shortage of decent ideas here, I just wish they had been executed better and overall this thing just feels lazy
My first exposure to against me! was the title track of this album and I was floored. Listened to the whole album immediately afterwards.
Even as someone who can't begin to understand how difficult it must be to go through the kind of struggle this album is inspired by, this album hit me like a fucking freight train while also packing in some absolute rockers along the way.
was just discovering mclusky around the time this album came out so was very eager to listen. not as aggressive or chaotic as a lot of their stuff in the 2000s but still a good listen. the influence from falco's other band, future of the left is definitely clear here, and it does a great job at showing how these musicians have changed since there last album came out 20 years ago, while still remaining distinctly mclusky. a lot of the songs blend together or just feel a bit slow for this ... read more
Kevin's music really struck me when I found his videos on Instagram, and his debut kinda sums up all the reasons why.
Incredibly calming but at the same time very emotionally affecting with it's brutally honest lyrics. Definitely one of my favourite singer songwriter albums this year
incredibly uneasy but strangely enticing and addictive, in my opinion the best track on the best album of the 90s
Not sure why this doesn't see as much attention from Cure fans as some other albums because I absolutely loved this.
Few bands have the ability to make me happy, sad, introspective, excited and so many more emotions in the span of one album the way this band do. This album perfectly captures so many of the moods and styles The Cure had displayed on previous albums, and executes them all incredibly well. Every song here is fantastic in its own right and as part of the whole ... read more
Absolutely obsessed with the cure right now, and was super excited to check this out considering how beloved it is within their discography.
This feels like much more of a collection of songs than a front to back experience the way albums like Disintegration do, but the songs themselves are still really really good for the most part. The more complex and gothic tracks like 'The Kiss' and 'All I Want' are here, but they're balanced really nicely with some of the ... read more
This band and this album are my biggest obsession right now. Every time I listen to this album I have a slightly different experience with it. The songs are so densely layered and beautifully crafted, Roberts vocals are some of the most distinctive and emotional in all of rock, and it's just one of the most gorgeous and immersive album experiences I've had in a long time.
I was so excited to check this out after how much I loved Do Dallas, and I have to say didn't get it the first time round. It's a lot more experimental and less accessible than it's predecessor and there's no big catchy standout track like To Hell with Good Intentions. But as it's own piece of work, I still think it stands as a very solid post-hardcore release.
It starts off strong with the first three tracks which show really well that something's different this ... read more
