The Cure - Disintegration

This band and this album are my biggest obsession right now. Every time I listen to this album I have a slightly different experience with it. The songs are so densely layered and beautifully crafted, Roberts vocals are some of the most distinctive and emotional in all of rock, and it's just one of the most gorgeous and immersive album experiences I've had in a long time.

I was so excited to check this out after how much I loved Do Dallas, and I have to say didn't get it the first time round. It's a lot more experimental and less accessible than it's predecessor and there's no big catchy standout track like To Hell with Good Intentions. But as it's own piece of work, I still think it stands as a very solid post-hardcore release.

It starts off strong with the first three tracks which show really well that something's different this ... read more

this album does not like you. it does not like itself. it does not like the music industry. it does not like people in general. it is pure unbridled misanthropy but goddamn it, misanthropy never sounded so fun.
from the shrieking, pounding opened of 'lightsabre cocksucking blues' all the way to the thumping 'whoyouknow' the album offers 36 minutes of concentrated energy in tracks that range from insanely abrasive (the world loves us and is our bitch' to cathartic and ... read more

My immediate reaction to this album was 'what the fuck is this' and then by the end of it I was addicted

Whirr - Distressor

Basically a perfect shoegaze ep

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
NR

This album has some of the best songs Em ever made but…
The lyrics on most songs are some of the edgiest, most annoying and at times genuinely disgusting lyrics I’ve ever heard. Eminem’s lyrical skills are undeniably impressive, but what he’s actually saying gets so far in the way of this album being a fun experience for me. Like they flat-out ruin a handful of the songs here because you just kinda feel like a piece of shit listening to them. It somehow manages to be ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - Wolf

A handful of great songs with some cool beats for early Tyler, but overall aged pretty poorly and some songs are genuinely annoying

System of a Down - Mezmerize
87

While it gets a little too crazy at points, Mezmerize is a wildly entertaining thrill ride of a metal record. Easily SOAD’s weirdest outing, but also possibly their funnest.

Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek

This is the most perfect use of vocoder I’ve ever heard

Radiohead - OK Computer

I mean come on it’s ok computer. Need I say more

Martyn Bennett - Grit
98

This record feels like someone making the exact type of music that they want to hear, regardless of conventional genre or tradition which is so strongly associated with Scottish folk. It really hits hard considering that this was Martyn’s final release before his death, because it’s easily his most accomplished and ambitious project. It feels so personal as it effortlessly bridges the (admittedly massive) gap between folk and electronic music without diluting the authenticity of ... read more

Paramore - Paramore
79

The first half of this record is full to the brim with some of the best songwriting of Paramore’s career. The 9-track run from ‘Fast in my Car’ to ‘Still Into You’ is near-flawless for me. My problem with the record is that after that point, none of the songs in the second half (except the closer) come close to the quality of that first half. None of them are bad, but almost nothing in on disc 2 stands out to me the way the best songs from the disc 1 did. ... read more

Jónsi - Go

I was recommended this album by a friend who said, and I quote, ‘It might be the best album ever made.’ And after a few listens, I can’t really disagree.
Every song here feels like you’re travelling at the speed of light directly into the sky on the back of a jetpack. Seriously, this whole album sounds extremely majestic and cathartic in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever heard before. There’s such great variety from song to song, but the mood of the ... read more

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85–92
90

This is one of the best-sounding albums I’ve ever heard. The compositions themselves are of course brilliant in their own right, but the production here elevates it to a whole new level. The absolute masses of reverb that is album is drenched in brings such an ethereal, immersive atmosphere to the tracks and that’s what I find myself coming back to this album for. It’s IDM at it’s absolute finest.

Björk - Homogenic
92

While I don’t have the same connection to this album as I do to Post, Homogenic is a more cohesive and forward-thinking project, with beautiful, serene strings, incredibly emotional vocals, drums that sound like something off an Aphex Twin record, and subversive, touching balladry in the lyrics.

The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber - STAY

Considering how I don’t care about Kid Laroi and have grown to hate Justin Bieber, this is a pretty fun pop song with an admittedly great chorus.

my bloody valentine - loveless

What can I say about this album that hasn’t already been said? This is just one of those albums where you notice more with every listen.
Originally, I gave this album a solid 7, because I didn’t get the mix, but the more I listen, the more sense it makes. A perfect album to just close your eyes and get lost in. Never heard anything like it before or since.
