pretty fun, my gf recommended this album to me and while I do really like some of the songs (like dr feelgood, kickstart my heart, she goes down) sometimes it kind of falls into 80's glam stereotypes. coincidentally it's also the last famous glam album 😭😭
fun record, very catchy songs but the people behind it are pretty bad and some lyrics make me raise my eyebrow (which is hilarious for a death metal fan), kind of commercial and pop-y but not that bad.
very fun and groovy BDM that also manages to be incredibly brutal (ofc), very slammy at times too, incredibly ahead of their time, some of their grooves feel like something that most of these modern deathcore/bsdm bands would copy, incredibly memorable, swampy and honestly very heavy too. only gripe is some mixing choices, wish the bass was way louder. but otherwise it's very good, highly recommend.
very consistent traditional gothic metal record, definitively has some interesting ideas since it's when Jonas stopped screaming, very good as a first completely clean sung record. a lot of it may sound very standard when it comes to gothic metal, but I think what sets Katatonia apart from other goth metal bands is their lyrics. love how hopeless and just overall sad they are, but some of them are a little interesting. either way it's pretty consistent, every track is good and catchy, ... read more
definitively one of their bleakest records, at least more than most of their albums before it, this one has more themes of hopelessness and loss, slower riffage, more symphonic elements... it's one of their most interesting albums for sure steering less into prog and more into straightforward gothic doom. it has a lot of great near flawless tracks but some towards the middle aren't nearly as good (keep in mind they're still good), only for it to pick up greatly again towards the ... read more
very fun almost thrashy death metal record, really like the guitars and the drumming and every song feels interesting. kind of set the record for later death metal bands to come, though later bands perfected and polished it, at least artistically. highly recommend, very important record
love Jonas' singing, incredibly mellow and soothing, over what I consider to be the band's best instrumental work outside of Brave Murder Day. What surprises me is the band's ability to change and mutate with each and every album. Incredibly fresh even, almost 10 years later. Near perfect front to back, incredible prog album with haunting gothic elements and progressive rock sections, with only some symphonic elements that feel SLIGHTLY (just slightly) artificial, but that's ... read more
some of the most angelic vocals over one of
the most crushing guitar tones in the history of metal possibly. incredibly numbing sound, pretty great song and alnum composition and feels about the right length. incredible album
vile record, with good drumming, and overall great instrumental and vocal performances, i find it to have some songs that are a bit forgettable, but otherwise it's pretty fun and nasty
very memorable and heavy at the same time. the lyrics manage to have incredibly good meaning and flow, over what I consider some of the best instrumentals in all of OSDM. The album feels very well paced, doesn't feel like it drags on too long, or it runs too short. Each songs has its own theme while still talking about (generally) blasphemy or discontent with christianity and religion overall. very heavy album, both sonically and lyrically. A must listen.
