Unbelievable how uninspiring this is after the absolute barn-burner of Escapology. Not a single interesting melody on the entire thing and here Robbie's trademark charm comes across as often annoying and demeaning. Dreadful work.
Mark is at his best when he's relying on good old-fashioned charm, here any time he veers into genre exploration he comes across a block to understanding that results in the worst work of his career.
Kind of a great album? About as unassuming as the first record but with lyricism that really puts Mark on the track, the songs have an urgency and an energy that he was unable to tap into the first time round. This comes at the sacrifice of some of the bigger creative risks however, and while this is undeniably a good time - it does veer a little too much into Disney Channel territory on certain tunes.
Unfocused and simply unlike Barlow - it feels like his confidence has been lost and with it the correct path to take, its a mess of sounds that either blend into one or just don't suit the performer. There are moments that feel like the best can be pried out, but it never comes.
The definitive Robbie record. All the ego and bombast swirling around in tunes that feel like releasing an impossible tension. Robbie's personality has never shined more brightly but it has also never tore so deeply into itself, greatness at the cost of the self.
