I came here to say Rest in Peace to D'Angelo. Thought I'll listen to this album aswell. I know it's been quite some time after his passing but it's always better late than never to say R.I.P.
To be honest, this album always caught my eye when I stumbled upon it, but I never actually wanted to listen to it, but since I've never heard any of his music before, I thought I might aswell listen to it and also pay my respects to him.
This is nothing short of amazing. All of the songs keep a similar tempo to keep you relaxed, this is pretty much the perfect album for a romantic evening or simply just to chill out.
Usually songs about sex can never be too good, but D'Angelo manages to pull it off. It isn't all that freaky, but it's still music about sex, so what can I say. Good one.
The production is obviously really good. The mix of Soul, R&B and Funk is done very well. Him being the sole producer and also primary performer is really impressive.
He did all of this with barely any features. Of course, Redman and Method Man are an obviously iconic duo, but their part on here didn't really work to be honest. Sure, the song was pretty good, but I don't think Hip Hop really works on an album like this, so no, I believe this could've been done without any features. Still cool though.
D'Angelo's performance was really amazing. His vocals are great, he definitely sounds like a romantic person, obviously matched with the instrumentals and all, his voice pairs really well with the instrumentals. He keeps a pretty slow tempo when singing, which sounds really nice.
To be fair, I used to think that he was a rapper, because he probably made some impact on Hip Hop, but I don't think he'd sound very good rapping. I think Neo-Soul is definitely the best genre for an artist like him.
The whole experience of this album was very nerve soothing, relaxing and just heavenly at certain points. Soul is always like this, don't get me wrong, but this felt like another world.
So yeah, definitely no dissapointment for this, and again, Rest in Peace, D'Angelo.
