A great return to form for The Killers after Wonderful Wonderful, which grew on me but is among the weaker albums in their catalogue. The lead single, Caution massively hyped me up, and although I don't really think of it as the absolute masterpiece I did back then, it's still a highlight. My Own Soul's Warning is even better, even if it does kind of sound like it's parroting off the success of Blinding Lights that year.
Blowback is a weird but sweet combination of country and disco, and in some ways foreshadows their next album Pressure Machine. Dying Breed is a great tune that samples Can and Neu! and has an excellent climax. Running Towards a Place is classic Killers with an updated feel, while When The Dreams Run Dry has a gorgeous synth palette and is the best non-single on here.
Lightning Fields is one of the fan favourites, but I always thought K.D. Lang's feature feels uneventful and the song falters in comparison to most of the others, including the other song with a guest vocalist, My God. The closing track also elicits a "that's it?" reaction, especially when stacked up against the likes of Why Do I Keep Counting and Battle Born.
Overall, excellent album and my favourite of 2020, narrowly beating out A Celebration of Endings by Biffy Clyro.
