Oh yeah motherfuckers we’re taking a plunge in the grunge of the post.
Anyways, this album is pretty airtight in the first half with many of the riffs feeling like a breath of fresh air and the songwriting across the board being somewhat risky for what genre these guys were in. This album came out a week or two after Kurt Cobain’s death, thus what maybe sparked the end of the infamous grunge era, and I think this album is representative of that in an unintentional way. It sounds like they took elements of bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana like the slight yarling and glassy guitars and just added onto it.
One of the most unique elements of this album is lead singer Ed Kowalsdkishocyk’s vocals and writing. He, mostly, sounds very unique and contained to this band, often adding to the tremendous buildups in many of these songs. Ed’s writing mainly feels (for a lack of a better word) quirky and maybe unpredictable. He overall adds a manic energy that can add to tracks that otherwise wouldn’t have reached their furthest potential.
Speaking of, the downsides of this record mainly lie in the fact that this album can live below it’s potential here and there, as many tracks on this quite frankly frontloaded album can feel like Ed and crew maybe aren’t giving enough intensity in spots they should be. To speak on the frontloaded problem, a lot of the best songs are in the front half, leading to some tracks in the back half feeling slightly underwhelming in comparison, even if they’re good songs. Regardless, this is a solid record for being one of the first post-grunge records and I can really see it being one of the highlights of this plunge.
