The devoted student of advertising will quickly notice that The National carried their eye for aesthetics from their old profession to their new one. Every album has a distinct feeling. The chorus of the opening track of Telefone, Noname's exceptional 2016 debut, sets the tone for the entire album. Telefone is an album drenched in nostalgia. There is something about an urban setting that makes large bodies of water more majestic, especially at night. A month ago, I watched The National perform on the banks of the Detroit river. It was sublime. Somehow, inexplicably, the water made the experience more soothing.
