The Strokes - Is This It
87

I'm not super familiar with the differences between this and the original album, but this is the one I own so it's the one I'll review! Although there's not much more to say about such a classic of the genre: it's got killer singles and perfectly captures the lo-fi garage rock vibe of the era. I don't enjoy the vocals being as buried as they are here compared to The New Abnormal, but that might just be a personal preference.

The Strokes - The New Abnormal
90

Maybe this shows that I'm not the most well-versed Strokes fan, but I think this is my favorite of their albums?? It's antithetical to what's considered their best work, but I love the clean production and Rick Ruben "less is more" mentality. Julien's falsetto comes through nice and clear which I love to hear, and the variety in the songwriting keeps it interesting. The only major flaw is Bad Decisions, funnily enough, because it sounds distractingly similar to ... read more

The Black Keys - Brothers
76

It grooves like a motherfucker, I just wish there was more variety in the songwriting and also some actually original lyrics. I'm still a sucker for the Danger Mouse production though, and it's got a lot of the band's best singles imo.

Angine de Poitrine - Vol.II
86

Unlike most people it seems, I only found out about these two from this album's release, not the viral KEXP show. They absolutely fuck though. The whole aesthetic is wonderfully insane on its own. What's truly impressive is the music is just as good to back it up. My closest point of reference would be KGLW's microtonal excursions, maybe with a bit more technicality and danceability behind it too. I love their little alien yelps that pop up occasionally too. My only complaint ... read more

Model/Actriz - Swan Songs
84

Glassman is incredible, and I feel like if I could replace a track on Pirouette with this it would elevate an already near-perfect album. The other two tracks here are good, but they remind me of the tracks I liked less on Dogsbody and I'm still not a huge fan of them here. Still, the atmosphere the band creates is always appreciated from me!

Robyn - Sexistential
80

I enjoyed this way more than I expected, having never listened to Robyn before this and also being absolutely not the target audience for an album like this. It largely focuses on her experiences approaching middle-age and reckoning with her feelings about motherhood and sexuality. It's got great pop production and some occasionally wild lyrics. She definitely lives up to her reputation as a veteran of the 2000s pop scene, without sounding dated at all.

Fcukers - Ö
88

The most low-key dance party you've ever been to. This feels like the first album that I've heard recently with an "indie-sleaze" aesthetic that truly captures the vibe, but not in an off-putting problematic kind of way. It's just a great collection of varied but cohesive dance tracks perfectly constructed for the club. Everything is super catchy but not annoyingly so, and the vocals are soft and sweet to match. It's an album that I could (and already have) let ... read more

Slayyyter - WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA
75

It sounds like the definition of hedonistic to me. I love the electroclash revival sound and her idgaf energy, though I do think it becomes more style over substance at a certain point. The bangers are definitely more compelling to me than the softer tracks as well. It's the musical equivalent of junk food but it sure does taste good.

Hurray for the Riff Raff - Live Forever
80

Wonderful live album! It makes me incredibly sad that the one stop on the Bright Eyes tour that they didn't open for was the one that I went to. But at least I can live vicariously through this project!

underscores - U
87

This album feels more cohesive and almost restrained for an underscores project. It's a full-fledged pop album with hints of hyperpop peaking through, making for a really good and accessible balance. It's like she spent her time honing her skills in the electronic underground to finally sprout and become a true pop star. Anyway! I do miss a lot the batshit experimentation from Wallsocket and her others, but U is definitely the more well-rounded project.

Haute & Freddy - Big Disgrace
86

This album is a masterclass in pop songwriting, which makes sense considering they're both established songwriters. The vocals are expressive and the production is crisp and expensive-sounding. It reminds me of Lady Gaga, MARINA, and Allie X all rolled together. A lot of the tracks do tend to end kind of abruptly though, and I wish they resolved a bit better. But overall this is an amazing debut!

Bruiser Wolf - PUSH & PAINT
52

Yeah this was surprisingly and very unfortunately not good. The production comes off super corny and Bruiser's singing/choruses are not his strong suit at all. He still threw in a witty bar here and there, but it's not enough to save the project. Plus, none of the features made any kind of impression on me. Super disappointing after his last album was so great.

Harry Styles - Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.
58

I had a feeling I shouldn't have gotten too excited. When a pop star tries out a new genre I feel like they often don't commit fully to the new sound. So songs like Aperture and Are You Listening Yet? end up being my favorites just because they actually sound like something new for Harry. But much of what's here is too watered down to be satisfying or, in the case of Dance No More, borderline offensive lmao. Ultimately, this album just makes me want to listen to LCD Soundsystem.

Various Artists - HELP(2)
85

Great compilation! I don't think there was really any tracks that I disliked, and there were definitely plenty that I loved. I even enjoyed the solo Cameron Winter song, which is rare for me despite my love for Geese. There's also a lot of artists on here that I had very little exposure to, so I feel like this was a great way to explore, especially the UK scene. And all for a great cause!

The Scythe - Strictly 4 The Scythe
77

I like It a lot more than his last project! I think this group gels really well and everyone brings a different vibe but similar energy. Denzel's in top form too and sounds a lot more expressive than I've heard him lately, and the throwback dirty south productionIs on point. They definitely stacked the bangers up front though. The last 3 tracks don't do a whole lot for me, but they fit well with the vibe.

Mitski - Nothing's About to Happen to Me
72

This is a good album, but it hasn't fully converted me into a true Mitski fan. I really enjoy when she leans into the heavier, indie rock sounds, so songs like Where's My Phone, If I Leave, and That White Cat (which reminds me a lot of St. Vincent for some reason) end up being my favorites. And the instrumentation throughout is lovely. But overall I end up feeling a little sleepy listening to this project, and I think I might not be the right kind of depressed to appreciate the lyrics ... read more

I was a little skeptical when I saw people comparing this to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, but honestly it's not that big of an exaggeration. The instrumentation is great, her performances are expressive and powerful, and the messaging hits like a truck. It falters a little with most of the features coming off kind of half-baked (besides Tierra Whack, who absolutely kills it), and the tracklist being a little bloated, especially towards the end. Still, it's a super cool project and ... read more

Master Peace - Stupid Kids
67

Fun little EP, but doesn't really do anything their debut album did better. Like, LOS NARCOS blows anything off this project out of the water. The first two tracks are good, leaning more into hardcore and dance sounds respectively. But the rest is a little too pop/generic to be super memorable. They definitely have promise for the future though!

Joey Valence & Brae - HYPERYOUTH (afterparty)
75

Fun additions, but | don’t think anything here surpasses what's on the main album. It feels a little more like what was on NO HANDS than the leveled-up production from HYPERYOUTH. I do like how they tie in the “dance, bounce” to make it flow into Intro!

Bruno Mars - The Romantic
65

Pretty much exactly what you'd expect: nothing terrible but nothing really great either. He has such an incredible voice, but uses It for the most cookie-cutter-waiting-room-type songs. It makes it clear that the chemistry with Anderson Paak. was why Silk Sonic ended up being such a good project. It's entirely listenable though, probably by design unfortunately.
