i hadn't found a new shoegaze album that really inspired or affected me for a while until i found this. phenomenal throughout. does everything shoegaze needs to do AND MORE! has the fundamental elements from the 90s, giving it a nostalgic twinge, but brings it into a new perspective that is so bold, and so powerful.
standout track: c=bain
just when you think you've gotten used to the sound, it pivots in a completely new way. beautiful blend of dreampop and triphop, showcasing the best of the two genres!
standout track: pacifico
this was one of the first non-mbv shoegaze albums i listened to, so it'll always have a special place in my heart, however i've become a tad more critical over time. i think the first half is a little weak in places, but everything is made up for with the combination of starting over & starshine. the vocal performance in starting over is especially mesmerising, and works so beautifully with the guitar.
standout track: starting over
listening to this knowing what we have from the duo is an interesting experience because you can almost see their development in real-time. it's not that the EP is bad by any means, it's just that it's somewhat incomparable to what we know they can do. this being said, move slow is a real standout, and feels a lot more aligned with the likes of mercurial world and imaginal disk.
standout track: move slow, obvs
definitely not the strongest in the synthpop canon, and it wanes a little in the last third, but it still holds up very well, and has a fair few really beautiful bits!
standout song: carried away
lyricism is rather ham-fisted at points, though overall motifs are strong. this is largely made up for by the charm effect & the pair's ability to trigger nostalgia whilst still feeling somewhat fresh.
standout song: ghost run free
