Danny Brown - Stardust
90

The different production styles on this album are nuts, and proof that Danny really can rap on any beat. Thoroughly enjoyed this album, might rate it higher after sitting on it a little bit. Will write a longer review after sitting on it a little bit too.

Favourite songs: 1999, Copycats, Whatever the Case
Least favourite songs: None.

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA +
95

I remember when this album came out and I discovered the extra track that was released alongside physical versions after a few days, listened to it and felt quite bummed out that it wasn't officially out on streaming. Listened a few times more and forgot about it.

Now, the track is out on streaming! Incredible song, obviously sucks there's only one song on the reissue however it's one of my favourite Tyler songs released across the last few albums, so I can't be too ... read more

WHATMORE - WHATMORE
70

Oh okay, this is their debut.

Currently on my 2nd re-listen and honestly this is a real solid album. I'm not quite sure how to formulate my thoughts on it, though. The highs on this album are really high, and the lows are well... low. The whole project is solid though, just a very run of the mill NY rap (pop rap) sort of sound that definitely works.

Obvious BROCKHAMPTON inspirations aside, if this is their beginnings, I genuinely cannot wait for what comes next. Glad to be on the ground ... read more

Kim Petras - Freak It
90

My favourite of the most recent Petras singles, will 100% have this one on repeat.

Kim Petras - I Like Ur Look
75

Kim Petras is back. I genuinely cannot believe what I am hearing.

After the run of recent albums I wasn't that excited to dive into her recent singles and have been putting it off for a while now but on the release of "I Like Ur Look" I've been pleasantly surprised to a development of her sound that actually sounds coherent and not half arsed.

Very excited for the album.

Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
100

There's not much I can say that hasn't been said already. Quadeca's "Vanisher, Horizon Scraper" is an incredible culmination of all of his musical talent and is packaged in a long project that never overstays.

I also cried many times to this album.

I felt wrong reviewing this so quickly due to recency bias and my personal bias for Quadeca. AOTY for me. Yep.

PARTYOF2 - AMERIKA'S NEXT TOP PARTY!
90

PARTYOF2 might just be the best duo to do it.

The whole album is fun back to front, with some occasional slower songs (namely, "SAVE YOURSELF") that serve to create a well rounded experience, packed into a neat 33 minute project. I usually bash on these short projects but I never at any point felt like this album, which has been on repeat the last two days for me, overstayed its welcome or left me feeling unfulfilled.

The production is flawless throughout and even the lower points ... read more

Doja Cat - Vie
70

It's really cool that Doja took a few years off music to perfect her pop sound!

All jokes aside, I'm glad she's returned to this sort of dreamy pop sound, but there are still kinks as far as project building goes.

Vie starts with an entertaining (and very strong) run of tracks in Cards, Jealous Type and "AAAH MEN!" and honestly, these tracks might be some of my favourite released this year. The only other notable track to me is "One More Time" which has an ... read more

PinkPantheress - Fancy That
80

I was wrong about pinkpantheress. I was wrong about pinkpantheress. I was wrong about pinkpantheress.

Ahem. Anyways. Pinkpantheress is back with a solid, cohesive project in the way of 'Fancy That', a new barrage of dance-pop tracks with some D&B/Garage influences and I'll be the 32nd person to say that this.. fucks dude. The tracks are all really enjoyable and get you pumped up on a boring day where you need a little pick-me-up which is exactly what dance pop SHOULD do! ... read more

2hollis puts down a great album.

they reported my review lol

also look at the profiles for each of the 90+ reviews, it's literally just the artist bumping his rating up lol

Wallows - More
65

I used to be a pretty big Wallows fan a while back, would listen to all the new releases, but there's something about this one that just.. lacks for me. Maybe I've gone off of them, maybe this EP just lacks the energy, maybe it's just more AJR adjacent than I would like.

On the whole, the production of this EP is solid. It all holds together in a coherant way and I definitely found myself enjoying some of the tracks at times, but there were certain points where tracks just felt ... read more

Perfume Genius - Glory
90

i want to preface this review by saying that this is my first PG album, but i am thoroughly impressed.

generally, i listen to music based off of vibes and genre, so when i need some energy, i'll listen to metal, rock, etc. saw this album and went "neat! i'll walk home from work listening to some indie rock!". what then transpired was a 45 minute melancholic stroll that took me on a weird adventure i was not expecting.

this album will be in rotation for a while, when i need ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA
100

Tyler, I love you.

Tyler's 9th project, Chromakopia displays a mastery of his previous sounds, wrapped into one neat little project that showcases his flexibility and incredible stylistic range. From the more "experimental" song 'Noid' to songs that are reminiscent of his older music in 'Sticky', it's evident that the guy is able to play around with his sound, in a way that still creates a coherent project.

I gave this one a little bit to review, since ... read more

Cameron Winter - Heavy Metal
90

I tend to open albumoftheyear and pick out whatever albums look interesting, and this album immediately caught my eye.

LIttle known fact, I am big into my metal music. So you can imagine my excitement when I see a highly rated album called "heavy metal", right? However, when I had opened spotify, booted up the album, I was whiplashed by a completely different experience. One that, I firmly believe, is one of my favourite experiences this year.

As I understand, 'Heavy ... read more

Dev Lemons - songs with the volume on
60

I personally believe Dev is going somewhere with this kind of music, although this collection of three songs is not coherant enough, at least in my opinion, to be worthy of any proper merit.

You can see some really neat production coming through on the track "quiet pain" which I honestly found myself enjoying. Despite this though, the rest of the EP wasn't really that fleshed out.

Excited to see the direction that's being taken, not so excited about this project in ... read more

ハルハ [harha] - 未来再来
70

I don't think this EP does anything in particular that really blew my socks off, however it's a tight set of feel good songs. These songs could've realistically been done by anyone but regardless, I enjoy 'em and will be adding a few to some playlists.
