The "director's cut", or "deleted scenes" of wallsocket improve on an already fascinating and impressive body of work, developing on the story of the original album, and introducing some fresh new sounds for us to dive into!
Going track by track, the first director's cut track, "My guy (Corporate shuffle)", was one that I extensively listened to when it was released as a single for the deluxe edition. Developing on the world of Wallsocket and giving us ... read more
You know what, I'll give her one thing, she's definitely mastered one sound. She knows her niche (or well, I guess category, can you call it a niche?) pretty well, and plays to her strengths.
On tracks like 'Illusion' and 'Training Season' she very much shows off that she knows what she is doing here. Tracks such as 'Maria' and 'Happy For You' deviate a little bit from the formula, and maybe that's why they're the less well received tracks, because they do fall short in certain ways.
But ... read more
Atavista by Childish Gambino is a reboot of an older album by him called '3.15.20' and improves on its predecessor in many different ways, notably with the production and the addition of one of my personal favourite tracks, 'Human Sacrifice'. But where there are improvements against the more "unpolished" version, this album still lacks in certain areas with features that seem really out of place and bland songs in the way of 'Little Foot Big Foot'.
Generally though, the tracks are ... read more
Shorter review because I'm only really going over the deluxe tracks here.
This is more of what I wish Scarlet was. This has genuinely restored my faith in Doja's ability to produce quality. It still retains some of what made Scarlet good, however returns to her roots a little bit and sounds like the best parts of some of her older stuff too.
Obviously the whole project isn't great, a few good songs aren't going to save the other songs from being utter crap (damn you "Wet Vagina"!) ... read more
Short track review after coming across it in the wild.
Production is immaculate, as most songs produced by Zetra are. The beat from the start is really punchy and grabs your attention, like if this beat was a person... anyways.
The vocals take away from the song for me, unsure if it's the mixing or just the voice of the guy, I've never listened to their other stuff before. The Riovaz verse was good though, I'll give it that.
Not one of my favourite singles, but it has its appeal!
I wish I loved it. Honestly, it's a cool project with a few ideas that I really fuck with, especially those presented on 'ANTHROPOL' but overall just comes off really unpolished.
I get it, some hyperpop just isn't going to appeal to everyone, however some of the choices on this EP feel really abrasive, and almost.. thrown in there for no good reason? As much as I love 'ANTHROPOL', it doesn't feel right on a project like this and honestly, if I had an album full of songs like that, as much as ... read more
I discovered this band yesterday, so my review may be a little on the "recency bias" side of things, however I just want to say that this album, to put it plainly, fucking slaps.
The songs themselves are incredible, the vocals are beautiful, the lyricism is interesting and despite all of that, there's one issue I have with this album that really ruins it for me, and it's that the songs together really blend together... almost too well? Usually I'm a huge fan of this (see my 'Plastic ... read more
'plastic death' by glass beach may be one of my contenders for album of the year already.
To preface this review, I've been a fan of glass beach since 2020 so my perception may be slightly biased, however this album is genuinely one of the most beautiful projects I've ever listened to.
In the beginning of the album, 'coelacanth' sets the tone, and I would say is probably one of the most intriguing album openers. The song never feels dull, or boring, and takes it's time to build up, which is ... read more
I don't listen to K-pop.
However, this album introduced me to a sound that I wasn't sure existed, that I can liken to R&B and very loosely, dance pop.
The intro track, 'Intro: Beggin' You' sets the course for the album perfectly, demonstrating the overall genre for the album. However, the album doesn't just stick to that! It demonstrates a wide variety of sounds, which I find fantastic.
Fantastic album, not one of my favourites, but maybe the sound will grow on me. Oneus's 'La Dolce ... read more
Honestly, what can I even say about this album? Words genuinely cannot describe how I feel about this album, the messages it puts forth, and of course the fantastic story outlined in the hour the album spans.
I want to begin by saying that this album has absolutely no skips, in my opinion. The features are amazing, the way the album tells the individual stories of the girls is amazing, the songs individually are amazing. The way the album seamlessly weaves into different moods and tells ... read more
It's generic, bland, but there's something to it that doesn't make it complete utter shit.
As far as the things I like on the album, I enjoyed 'Psycho'! I think thematically, it's a nice song, and has a solid structure, it's something I might actually go out of my way to listen to, occasionally.
However, that's really where the album peaks. The rest of the songs have basically the same structure, same sound and well... yeah it's just all the same. I wish Taylor Acorn did more within this ... read more
Honestly this album was an experience to listen to. Now, while I'm not exactly the demographic for this album, there's something to be found within the pop rock sound that really resonated with me.
This album has plenty of strengths, but my favourite thing has to be the contrast between soft and harder sounds within the album. 'all-american bitch' is probably one of the best starts to an album I've heard in a while, then the album ebbs and flows between harder sounds shown in 'get him back!' ... read more
Forgettable.
I recently listened to feed the beast, and I thought that this might be a bit of an upgrade! It was, but still falls short of being memorable, or anything worth really listening to properly. Maybe it'll grow on me, but for now, meh.
Favourite track was probably (hot take) 'Treat Me Like A Ho' because of how fun it is, compared to the rest of the album. A lot of the album falls into the same sort of dance-pop garbage and nothing really stands out, but at least 'Confession' was ... read more
Yeah, I didn't like it. I really wanted to enjoy this album, but past the cheesy writing and the constant iterations of the message "fuck people who don't like me" there really was just nothing of substance aside from maybe one or two songs that I actually enjoyed.
As far as the positives for this album go, it has a few really really good songs! Songs such as 'Agora Hills' and 'Ouchies' have to be some of my favourite songs that I've listened to recently. 'Agora Hills' especially is ... read more
I just want to start by saying that despite this album being edgy in nature, I still really enjoyed it, and there were some good sounds within it. It's so unapologetically in your face, and "listen to this shit, now." However, some tracks such as 'You Make Me Sick!' fall flat, sounding much like their previous songs outside of this album, this one in particular just grates on me since it feels almost tailor made for a tiktok trend, and I would be surprised if I didn't see this on my ... read more
I was excited when I found out this album came out, but soon set on a rollercoaster of emotions towards the songs within this LP. I want to iterate, I did enjoy this album, BUT there was a ton of genres, which ended up grating on me, honestly.
That being said, this album has some REALLY strong songs, such as not_me_tho, GONER and probably my favourite on the project, BBC. BBC, honest to god, was probably one of my favourite songs I've heard recently. I'm an absolute whore for a good beat, and ... read more
I have to say that this is probably one of my favourite albums of all time.
It's hard to define something like this into a genre, and if you could pin it down, someone else would completely disagree with you and say it's some other combination of 3 adjectives that doesn't make any sense. I think in essence, that's part of what makes glass beach's debut album so amazing, the fact that everyone can listen to it and pull different vibes, themes, sounds from it.
From the drifty interludes to ... read more
