Of Monsters and Men - All is Love and Pain in the Mouse Parade
85

I really enjoyed this. I more stripped back and folksy approach to their sound, and I think it really showcases this band at their best. It's an album, similar to some of London Grammar's and Hozier's stuff, that I just find myself coming back to time and time again. Quite a good album that I think will get even better as time goes on and I keep listening to it.

Favorite Track: Fruit Bat

Michael Clifford - SIDEQUEST

A relatively harmless album that is short, sweet and does what it needs to do. The music style harkens back to a nostalgic time and it does that fairly well. I will say that this album is hardcore carried by its opening single with Porter Robinson. That track slaps.

Favorite Track: kill me for always

Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl
35

The frustrating thing is we know that Taylor is a better songwriter than this. From what I heard, she tried to appease everyone and in doing so made everything so bland and uninteresting to listen to. I would have rathered her take a huge swing with something like Reputation. Even if it didn't land, I would have liked to have something interesting to listen to. This is truly in one ear and out the other.

I also agree with some random tik toker that said that you can tell that Travis ... read more

Bad Suns - Accelerator

If you like their other stuff, you'll like this one too. Nothing to revolutionary, but definitely fits within their sound and adds to their catalog of indie pop jams, while also bringing some catchy ballads to the table.

Favorite Track: Slow Karam

I definitely wanted to sit with this album before rushing here to give me thoughts. I listened to this album on its premiere night, and at that point I wasn't super sold. I mean some of the songs were certified bops, but most of those were the singles (The Contract, Drum Show, City Walls). The rest of the album I wasn't super sold on at that time, especially some of the opening tracks, like RAWFEAR and Garbage, with some questionable lyrical choices that did not vibe with my brain on ... read more

Ed Sheeran - Play

Gave up half way through. Generic, soulless and totally not my cup of tea. I'm sure this made his fans super happy, but jesus was this bland. The only interesting thing was hearing him rap on the Opening track (not in a good way though).

Arca - Arca

On a random Wednesday, I picked a random "Must Listen" album to give a try. Now, as a person who does not particularly care for latin music or experimental music, I was a bit hesitant. There is definitely a lot of cool ideas and interesting concepts, but as is the case in most experimental works, it always feels that the ideas are underdeveloped. Can't say I am a huge fan, but I can see that this might do it for a specific group of people. Also that album cover is tough to look ... read more

Talking Heads - Remain in Light

I knew of Once in a Lifetime but never listened to this full album. Now that I have, there is a reason I have only heard of Once in a Lifetime. The full album is a quirky expression of 80's experimentation and it works fairly well. Some of the riffs get repetitive, but the grooves go hard on others. I was expecting a bit more wow factor from such a critically acclaimed album, but for the time it was released, I can see how this would blow some minds and break the mold.

I will never understand the hate this album got. It's their COVID album, and forced the band to go in a different direction then previously intended. Canonically it's supposed to sound cheesy and manufactured. And even not canonically, it sounds great and has some fun tunes. It's not their magnum opus or anything, but I don't think it was as bad as some of the critics made it out to be.

Favorite Track: Redecorate

Conan Gray - Wishbone

Another step in the right direction for Conan. I think that this album brings about a little bit of maturity in his song writing and a bit of tenderness. The production was on point and he sounds fantastic. The lyrics are a bit hit and miss, but overall, I think this album shows that he continues to grow as a musician and artist.

Favorite Track: Vodka Cranberry (specifically the way he sings "Speak Up, I know you hate me")

BOYS LIKE GIRLS - THE HOMECOMING (LIVE FROM THE MGM MUSIC HALL AT FENWAY PARK)

A pretty raucous and rowdy live album. If you already like this band, then you will like this. The track list looks really bloated, but it works as live album and flows really well.

Favorite Track: THUNDER

AJR - What No One's Thinking

I think this is their most mature project to date. It still has some of the cheesy elements that they are known for, but I think this ep sounds good. The production is really solid and Jack’s voice shine through.

Hayley Williams - Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party
90

Listening to this right after Sabrina Carpenter's "Man's Best Friend" was wild. There is just a different level of maturity is this album, as a musician, songwriter, and producer. The ideas here are just so much bolder and thought through. Hayley is one of the more underrated and under appreciated female artists of my generation. I will definitely be sitting with this album some more.

Favorite Track: Glum

twenty one pilots - MTV Unplugged

The jocals go so hard. One of the coolest live performances by this band, and a testament to their talent as musicians.

Sabrina Carpenter - Man's Best Friend
50

As the first full project that I have listened to by Sabrina, this confirms my suspicion that Carpenter is built for the single. She has a couple bangers that get massive airplay, but the rest of the album is just meh. Her albums are vessels for the singles, which is fine, but not my style. The production is lush and full, and her voice sounds incredible. However, I just don't know if there is enough here to keep my attention for a full album. Also, call me crazy, but I think there is a ... read more

Stellar sophomore album. Keep up the good work gents.

Maroon 5 - Love Is Like

Better than some of their other stuff, but I don't like this new funk & R&B infused direction that the band is taking. This falls into the same soulless pitfalls that their previous works have, except with a new genre twist. Some of the tracks at the top of the record were ok, but the back half falls off hard with songs that all sound the same, and a full R&B track that I skipped very quickly. Adam's voice is not made for this kind of music. I just want to go back to the ... read more

Lucky Daye - Painted

Definitely one of the more tolerable R&B albums I've come across. Love the brass and jazz elements which rounded out some funky and cool tracks.

Ethel Cain - Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You

Devastating in the best way possible. A beautiful tapestry of heartbreak and soundscapes. Usually I do not have patience for songs that are ridiculously long, however both "Tempest" and "Waco, Texas" were my favorite two tracks. Both had such lush and full production to counterbalance the absolute emotional wrecking ball that is the lyrics and her voice. Beautiful record, and will definitely look into more of her stuff soon!
