I do love this album, despite or perhaps because of it's messy nature.
Beautifully expansive and experimental. Some truly epic shit in here, even if it's a bit dense.
Over the years, this has become one of my most consistent go-to's. "Gimme More" is one of her best singles ever. It's a shame it didn't pop off in 2007 like it deserved. But then when you dig in and hear "Freakshow" and "Get Naked (I Got A Plan)" and "Hot As Ice" you realize how influential this album was on a production level. Credit to Danja for taking this album to a different level. And of course all credit to Britney, who's indistinguishable voice ... read more
Ms. Shakira went in here. There are some misses, but she was really at her most powerful.
I have stanned Mandy since 2000 when I made my mom buy me So real on cassette. Remember those days? My gay 9 year old self had many a dance session to side A of that tape, believe me. Well, now, two decades later, and 11 years since her last album, Mandy Moore has delivered a beautiful collection of songs with a very cohesive Los Angeles rock sound tying them all together. My favorite tunes are "Easy Target", "Forgiveness", "I'd Rather Lose", and "Trying My ... read more
An underrated album! So much weird witchy dark shit on here that you have to respect. She could have turned around and let Ron Fair write her another huge hit, but she made this cool weird little album with lots of great songs. "Who's To Say" should have been the lead single, a hill I will ALWAYS die on. "San Francisco" would even have been a better single, as much as I love "White Houses". But it's the dark songs, like "Half A Week Before Winter", ... read more
Solid solid. The minimal production sometimes gets in the way of songs that should be more fully produced ("Nothing Where Something Used To Be", "House of Seven Swords" and, let's be honest, "Operator") but the songwriting itself is excellent. Some songs ("River" and "Matter of Time") are pleasant but largely forgettable. But songs like opener "Take It Easy" and closer "Ascension" really do it for me. A lot to applaud here.
I came here to say that Ms. Vanessa Carlton needs more respect put on her mf name, because this album is a near masterpiece. It's moody, atmospheric, at times crazy epic. It's all perfectly measured. "I Know You Don't Mean It" is a quintessential Vanessa Carlton song, and the production elevates it. "Die Dinosaur" slaps. "The Only Way to Love" is such a beautiful explosion of hope and love. It's healing. "Salesman" is THAT song tho. Art rock excellence. ... read more
