Emotionally gutting, mostly.
This is the most emotionally moved I have ever felt listening to a Mountain Goats record, mostly thanks to its masterful and highly personal lyricism, Darnielle being able to tell a story and paint a picture with his words perfectly as always, and the amazingly done production, making the instrumentation feel close and intimate. However, though not bad, there are songs that do not have a punch to them as the other songs, like Broom People, and Dinu Lipatti's Bones. But when this album punches, it hits hard, like Love Love Love, and Up the Wolves. You can tell each and every song was made with pure care and passion, even if it doesn't always pan out. And though there are better tracks than others, this album is well paced and well tracklisted, always grabbing your attention with the production and the lyrics and instrumentation. There's not much else to say than this album is really really good, and I highly recommend checking it out. I will come back to this one
