Joy Division - Closer
90

This was the first album by Joy Division I listened to, and I had to listen to it twice to grasp it fully. I felt mellow the first time I listened to it; I wasn't sure why, considering the production didn't necessarily reflect that emotion. I thought I was missing something. When I listened to it a second time, I paid more attention to the lyrics and the emotion of the vocalist. That's when it hit me: this album is dark as hell. After listening to it again, I went on a deep dive. ... read more

Deep Purple - Machine Head
83

The riff on "Smoke On The Water" sounds so familiar that I'm pretty sure it was played in the movie "School of Rock" for a few seconds, but it was the first song by Deep Purple that I listened to and saved 2 years ago. The album had insane solos from start to finish. The drums were quick and drew me in, and the guitar and bass were so consuming. The production of "Lazy" was fun; the opening was groovy and had a nice beat, it was kind of jazzy. "Highway ... read more

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
87

This was a masterpiece. The lyrics had an amazing flow, told a story, and delivered other messages throughout the album. There were some jabs here and there at the music business, which I found entertaining, and the saxophone added substance to the tracks. This is the first time I listened to jazz being incorporated into a hip-hop album, and I think that added so much essence, separating it from the others. On top of that, Busta Rhymes' last verse on Scenario was disgusting; I loved ... read more

N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
85

This album has many of the elements of hip-hop I look for. With mean beats and insane bars, this is my favorite type of hip-hop. It's a classic; it's raw and gritty. I was able to get a feel of the group as a whole and each of the members from their individual verses, and Ice Cube is probably my favorite member of the group. I found some lyrics to be hilarious, not in a derogatory way, I enjoyed them. I found Something 2 Dance 2 a little bit out of place in the album, but it's a ... read more

English Teacher - This Could Be Texas
85

What an album! This is English Teacher's first album, and I'm already in love with their sound. It's artsy, passionate, and more than indie rock. Production-wise, the instrumentals astoundingly supported the presentation of these songs. The lyricism, the vocals, and the overall delivery were on point. The album took me on a journey, from feelings of freedom and relief to melancholy and reflection. The lead singer's voice is soothing and powerful, conveying deep emotion. ... read more

The Strokes - The New Abnormal
80

Despite being released in 2020, I feel nostalgic from listening to this album (even though I wasn't born yet when The Strokes debuted). While listening to this album, my mind would start envisioning scenes from coming-of-age TV shows from the early 2000s (I've been watching One Tree Hill). The Strokes defined indie rock with this album, as they always have. This time, they are simply incorporating hints of modernity in their production and it definitely adds more to their music.

Little Simz - Sometimes I Might Be Introvert
90

This album took me on one hell of a journey. From start to finish, the instrumentals and the vocals are astronomical. The lyricism on these songs are personal and touch on social issues; accompanied by amazing production, the delivery is outstanding and compelling. The interludes took me into another dimension, making the storyline of this album an immersive experience. This has got to be one of the best hip-hop/rap albums of all time. It doesn't matter if you listen to music for its sound ... read more

Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS
82

I cried listening to this album. With super relatable lyrics and that pop-rock sound, there's definitely signs of growth in GUTS in comparison to SOUR.

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
97

Incredible production by Finneas. The HIGHLY UNEXPECTED transitions in and between songs took me on a fun audio journey. You can tell that she was definitely pushing boundaries in her craft with subplots towards other genres while staying true to her essence and what she is known for. I've never enjoyed an album listening experience like this and I'm glad that I'm experiencing this with Billie Eilish. SUPER SOLID ALBUM!!!
