With Megadeths venture in the 90s and early 2000s in more radio friendly rock, starting with youthanasia and ending with world needs a hero, their popularity within the metal scene started diminishing, but i have to say, their 1997 album Cryptic writings isnt a bad album, just different than their earlier works, and not "megadethy" in a sense that its a thrash masterpiece

This has to be one of, if not the best thrash metal albums, or hell, maybe even all of metal. From start to finish its almost perfect with masterful riffs and shreds, good lyrics even with Dave's rather lackluster singing voice, which is not only bearable but enjoyable here unlike in later albums.
