Art Tatum - Piano Starts Here
85

such a pleasant listen and the playing here is impactful, every pianist after Art Tatum wanted to be more like him.

Charlie Parker - The Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes
95

This is one of the most important “albums” America has ever contributed to music all music made after this finds inspiration rooting to it

Ornette Coleman - Dancing in Your Head
95

I don't know if I'm fully confident in calling this a perfect record, but it's gotta be one of the strangest and out there listening experiences you can get from this medium.

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
80

This is the album equivalent of a Wes Anderson movie if that makes sense

Fishmans - 若いながらも歴史あり96.3.2 @新宿LIQUID ROOm [2nd March 1996 at SHINJUKU LIQUID ROOM]

Some of these tracks turn to noodling but the ones that don't are great

Pharoah Sanders - Love in Us All
90

This is so wonderful

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
95

This is such a monumental album with such incredible performances, it’s a flawless record.

Pharoah Sanders - Wisdom Through Music
65

Not a weak album but I find it that these songs don't feel as fleshed out as they could be.

Charlie Christian - The Genius Of The Electric Guitar
65

Undeniably Charlie Christian is one fo the most influenccial jazz musicans of all time, for guitar at the very least, but while this sounds good, and you can tell Charlie is really paving a way for future jazz guitarists I can't say I'm in love with what he's doing like other other jazz guitarists such as John McLaughlin, Masayoshi Takanaka, Grant Green, and Wes Montgomery. This compilation is like the perfect place to get into jazz for a guitarist but once you get further down ... read more

Art Blakey - Free for All

This really is something special

John Coltrane - Ballads
70

Whenever Coltrane dips into cool jazz for a full album it tends to not show as much emotion as his modal and spiritual stuff. I’m not saying he can’t do it right songs like naima and my little brown book an incredible, but most of the time Coltrane doesn’t do this style as well as his contemporaries. Definitely not bad but didn’t move me too much, McCoy’s playing is really good though.

福居良 [Ryo Fukui] - Mellow Dream
65

Really high highs but some tracks tend to go out there other ear

Miles Davis - Ascenseur pour l'échafaud
70

Not bad by any means but too short and gimmicky for my liking

John Prine - John Prine
75

This is very solid but not too remarkable imo

Stereolab - Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements
NR

I enjoyed it, but I feel like a lot of these songs sound the same to me

Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas
100

This one of those albums I’ve heard since I was little and it has always stuck with me. Every time I listen to this record I always get this comfort washing over me, it feels like I’m being held by my grandma when I was younger.

Regardless of the feeling this is just cool jazz done perfectly, most poorly done cool jazz tend to fall into background music because they aren’t musically interesting enough to be give a real listen. This record is definitely not one of those ... read more

"Sorry for misinterpreting what you said, the reason I said it would be corny is because a lot of really big Boris fans don’t actually like metal they just like Boris so I find it silly when people say they’re the best band in a genre they aren’t super well versed in."

On Calvin's review of Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz
"Not trying to hate or nothing, but your perspective on free jazz is false, free jazz has a lot of structure still, it's not like king crimsons moonchild where the musicians did anything they could think of, even on the more wild free jazz records their is still structure to the form. The structure isn't like a standard chord progression, but the musicians had an outline on where to run wild."
