Khruangbin - Con Todo El Mundo
84

With the limitations of a three piece band in the modern day, Khruangbin exceeds expectations and make complete use of all their resources. For the most part laidback, calm and enjoyable. The songs you end up enjoying on the album are probably going to be the ones friends have put on at certain events, and the song will then remind you of that time. Its a simple album and August 10 often makes me feel nostalgic for the days out in the sun at the park with my friends. Khruangbin's Con Todo El ... read more

Oneohtrix Point Never - Age Of
88

Fantastic record. I could use countless adjectives but in the end I don't think anyone really knows why they love OPN so much. Love the medieval cinematic sound that is introduced in the beginning and reappears towards the end. Love the chaos of Warning and We'll Take It. Love the chord progression and harmonies of Toys 2 and The Station. Lopatin does dive into using his voice on this record and I've gotta say that I was not so fond of it on Babylon, despite James Blake helping Lopatin on the ... read more

Ross from Friends - Family Portrait
76

Ross from Friends' debuts with an album expected of a Brainfeeder signing but sadly doesn't do enough to be catapulted to the front lines of the label. With a past submersed in the lo-fi house scene along with producers DJ Boring and DJ Seinfield, Ross from Friends has always stood out for me as an artist. Songs like Romeo, Romeo and Talk To Me You'll Understand are underground classics that I still very much enjoy to this day. Family Portrait moves away from a dance perspective and instead ... read more

Blank Banshee - MEGA
84

Surprise album MEGA is Blank Banshee sounding more like Blank Banshee than ever, but this doesn't work too well in his favour. Its hard to listen to MEGA without comparing it to the "legendary" Blank Banshee 0 album that everyone even outside of vaporwave seem to enjoy at least in some ways, and this comes with consequences. MEGA feels less focused, as if he has figured out the theory for making his fans happy. He'll fit in an obscure amount of diverse samples into an everchanging ... read more

The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers
76

The "Godfather of Punk" Jonathan Richman and his band the Modern Lovers prove that the only reason this album is rated so highly is because of who it influenced and not for what it is itself. The strong influences of The Doors and The Velvet Underground are apparent on the album, Especially due to the fact that John Cale produced most of the tracks on the album, but I cannot help being annoyed at the how similar Richman at times can sound like Lou Reed. Many people praise this album ... read more

Massive Attack - Mezzanine
91

You only need a few seconds of listening to understand what all the hype is about. Immediately you are thrown into this dystopian, eerie and looming atmosphere constructed out of a heavy and tight sub bass that flows so incredibly well with the crisp and groovy rhythmic beats of the drums. Angel sets the bar high for Mezzanine and Massive Attack manage to maintain this level almost entirely throughout the album. The focus is clearly on the sub bass and the drumming as the haunting vocals and ... read more

Moow - I Can't Tell You How Much It Hurts
71

Moow's debut album is a collection of melancholy beats for late night walks by yourself. The album crams 23 beats into a 40 minute album but overall conveys the same exact nostalgic melancholic almost vaporwave like feel to every single track. Its hard to pick songs out when they all sound so similar but I did end up having a few highlights such as the vocal performance on Wake Up and the rhythmic vocal slices on the song Honey. The problem most people have with chillhop records like these is ... read more

Polo & Pan - Caravelle
79

*listened to deluxe edition*
Polo and Pan's debut effort starts slightly awkwardly but quickly manages to deliver. Songs like Nana and Zoom Zoom are wonderful house tunes, however I can't help but feel like I've heard everything there is to the album halfway through. When Polo & Pan decide to go out of their comfortable box of tropical dance music to something slightly more experimental like the song Mexicali, it feels out of place and poorly executed. Later on in the album with the song, ... read more

Brian Eno - Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks
98

Brian Eno gives you the colours and lets you paint your experience of Apollo yourself. This beautiful masterpiece allows for imagination to flow to places you'd never thought of going. Songs like An Ending and the Secret Place build scenes with more detail than the highest budget movie you could go watch in the cinema currently. The journey through the album is astonishing as Eno, seemingly without effort builds these contrasting atmospheres out of what seems thin air. Listening in public with ... read more

Ween - The Mollusk
93

Daring and yet so confident. The Mollusk follows a thread of playfulness and fun throughout with no shortage of ideas whatsoever. Every song completely detaches the previous without sounding too unfamiliar. I see myself returning to this album for so many moods, hitting every spot on the palette. The hooks are tight and catchy and the instrumentals are unpredictable and perfectly executed. Truly is an absolute masterpiece that only gets more interesting with every listen. Not only one of the ... read more

twenty one pilots - Trench
82

Solid piece of pop music that leaves plenty for listeners to return to.

Kero Kero Bonito - Time 'n' Place
94

Like most of the KKB songs after bonito generation, the songs on the album take a while to get settled with especially as their sound almost comes as shock for casual fans. However, KKB decide to make it very clear from the starting track that they are fully confident in their new approach. Naturally this tends to split fans and after a few listens of the album I'm happy to be on side that enjoys it. Expectations however will ruin most first listens of the album and I suggest giving it another ... read more
