James Blake - Trying Times

Blake's most cohesive and concise record to date. Despite spanning across multiple genres, from soft ballads to huge dance tracks, it manages to deliver a very consistent and positive message that is much needed to the world at this time. Although the experimental production found in earlier records was generally toned down for this album, this reflects his development as both an artist and a person, having achieved a newfound clarity in the "Trying Times". As a result, the album ... read more

Absolutely loved the album. Maximalism at its finest imo
So dense and layered with everchanging textures it's such a good listen and some of these garage rhythms are so good
I prefer this ealier future garage stuff so much more than the NUKG stuff nowadays omds altho i do know it's a diff target
I honestly enjoyed every track and saved most of them except like maybe the first one which felt a bit more standard compared to the rest but loved that too. And that last track was so wide ... read more

This albums feels like a spiritual successor of Kid A and Amnesiac, but with a stronger internal monologue and well... lyrics that make sense. This album really grows on you. It's not easy to get started, but once you do...

I must say, the production on this album is really lush and layered with every instrument - including her husky, whispered voice - meticulously textured and kept sonically interesting. The result is an incredibly intimate and warm sound that feels so effortlessly cool even when vulnerable or emotionally charged. Despite taking from many different genres, from grunge-tinted guitars to neo-soul to electronic influences, the album still feels cohesive in a way that is unmistakably her own.

Wow. Just wow. I couldn't get into it at first, but once I had... i cant explain it in words.
It feels bare, it feels empty yet full, and there is an eeriness to it all that feels so human. Its songs lack a traditional structure and instead develop organically and abruptly, leaving the listener to linger in the texture and space James creates. His use of textures and layering to build up sounds is part of what's so captivating. It's almost as if the song's got a life of its ... read more

The album that taught me about the effect of texture in music. A masterpiece.
It feels so alien and distant yet is able to evoke such strong emotions precisely due to that.

This album's unique blend of an eerie, sometimes jarring coldness with its raw warmth and emotion is something that I have yet to find elsewhere. Will always have a special place in my heart.

"Hey mate, do you have any ambient synth albums you can recommend if I like this? I really love the sound of this one, especially the first track 'Moonlight Whispers'. I really like how deep and fuzzy the synths sound here and those arpeggiated notes over the drones and haven't been able to find an album with that same tone and energy. I keep feeling like I've heard the individual elements elsewhere, but I can't find that precise combination and it's been driving me crazy. Also, are there any fundamental/classic albums within this genre that probably influenced this album? I’m pretty new to ambient music and would really appreciate any recommendations or guidance. Thank you for your time!"
