This is Conans strongest effort to date. The album tells multiple shorter stories of love and heartbreak with a personal sort of interlude in class clown. Of these stories Conan pushed the one of Will and Bran through the lead singles and music videos which included: This Song, Vodka Cranberry, and Caramel. This album feels like you are drifting. It takes the listener on a journey, floating along the songs as it slowly ramps up in intensity with highs and lows until finally its explosive conclusion on Casper. The production is absolutely outstanding through the course of this album and lyrically it is beautiful. However the area it doesn’t shine as much is Quadeca’s performance. His singing is just fine and his rapping is above average but nowhere near as good as the rest of the album.
After the release of the preluxe I was concerned as to how this album would turn out. I should have known my concern would be unwarranted, however, as this is JID. God Does Like Ugly is a phenomenal album with incredible production and stellar lyricism. Standout features from Clipse and Vince Staples bring an extra layer to the album and though I wish J Cole would have featured on this the guest list was more than satisfactory.
