Be honest with yourself. How many albums are really better than this?
I don't hate this album, I fear to love this album, because I'm suspicious of music that's too positive.
The concept is more interesting than the music itself.
A remarkable album that loses potency in how much of a sprawl it is. The presentation is different but I can't say it lands with the same intentionality as his previous releases. It's too long with forgettable cuts towards the middle. There is bloat. We Cry Together is incredible but sticks out in the tracklist pretty dramatically from everything else around it. Willoughby Tucker really only hit right for me once and it was in the car. Maybe I'll change my score if or when my opinion changes. For now though, it's kinda how I initially felt about Preacher's Daughter before that grew on me. It's vacant, sad, sounds like the dread of being abused and, like that feeling, it's hard to drag myself through. It's so slow. It's just not giving my enough to chew on aside from making me aestheticize ennui.
