Dev Lemons - SURFACE TENSION

What the hell, this album is definitely better than a 71/100, aoty. Gets better with repeated listens too, which is why I upgraded my score. Can't wait to see what she does next.

Tropical Fuck Storm - Fairyland Codex
NR

First listen: this is pretty good.
Tenth listen: JFC!
It's one of those.

The lyrics are heartbreaking and cathartic and a helluva standout along with sheer emotional range and a strong sense of melody. One of the few bands addressing the utter madness of the times we're living without being obnoxious or boring about it, particularly on songs like Goon Show and title track, Fairyland Codex with its instant classic chorus refrain, "A village in hell is waiting for you, a ... read more

Written with BOYS NOIZE, as another user said, "TECHNO NIN FUCKS." Yes, the vocoder vocals are absolutely a reference to Daft Punk's previous Tron soundtrack. Is that not completely bloody obvious? This is classic aggressive dance NIN with a facelift. Sure, it is a little Hollywood-scifi-action-movie-esque, but that's literally what it was created for. At sixty fucking years old (!!!), Trent is still creating dancefloor barn burners to soundtrack our eyelids-pinned-open ... read more

The Cure - I Can Never Say Goodbye (Paul Oakenfold "Cinematic" Remix)
5

I literally burst out laughing in the first 20 seconds, which is the only reason I was able to give this a five. Imagine, I dunno, an awful action movie soundtrack complete with booms and swooshes plus the delicate emotions of a Cure song. This is so far beyond melodramatic Hollywood cheesiness it's hard to quantify. Except with a five. For the lols. I am disappointed in myself for writing that last sentence.

Amnesia Scanner - Tearless
NR

You're probably not going to get what you want out of this, but it's still amazing. AS have a habit of forcing you to reckon with what they've produced rather than giving your brain what it wants to hear.

Imagine some ungodly combination of Arca, Too Dark Park-Skinny Pupppy, Sophie, Autechre, auto-tuned post-industrial Ye-ish pop vocals (surprisingly strong), and a hint of Aphex Twin in a minimal blender (how can a blender be minimal?), and you've got the musical paradox that is Tearless.
